EGR Valve operation

Hello all,

Could someone confirm the following: Can the EGR valve on a 95 Max opens when the car is in neutral and not moving?
The Haynes and the Service Manual for the 95 Max says that it should operate when the car is in neutral, warmed up, between 2-4K rpm and not moving (low vehicule speed). But when you read the "system description", it states that the ECM will not open the solenoid if the car is not moving. A little contradiction.

The books for the 96 Max says that you must unplug the solenoid to see if the EGR valve opens at 2-4k rpm. If I perform this test, the EGR valve operate as it should.

Is there an error in the 95 Haynes and Service Manual?

Can someone with a 1995 Max confirm if the EGR valve operates when car is in neutral, warmed up, between 2-4k rpm and not moving?

Please help me
Thank you for any help you can provide,
Stephane

I'm having EGR problems myself. I ran the car to temp, put my hand under the EGR and revved the engine to about 2000rpm I felt it go up. I held it there and revved it higher and it came back down. Not sure if this is normal operation. I have a 96se no mods and 2 engine codes. 0304/0302

it moves without car moving, and when you rev the engine it should stay open for about 30 seconds then close (sustained rev 4k rpm), the book says clean it if you have deposits but don't get solvent on the diaphram.

Thanks Armelius and eric96se,

Armelius, did you try it on your car? I would need someone who doesn't have any problem witht their EGR valve to confirm if the EGR valve operates when car is in neutral, warmed up, between 2-4k rpm and not moving. Please?

Then I guess my problem is with the ECM not opening the solenoid valve. I guess a trip to the dealer is required. Unless of course someone has another idea.

Thanks again
Stephane

this valve is very tough, it does get pitted though, all I did was put my fingers up the bottom and moved the diaphram a few times because it was stuck. Eventually, I will have to pull it out and clean it up. Was going to buy another one but Discount Auto said 109 bux for it, I said forget that.

These should last at least 500k miles with cleaning.

you can scrape or use a little solvent but don't get any on diaphram.
