Tranny problems

I have a stock 96 GLE with 65k original miles on it. Latley my automatic tranny seems to be dragging when going into 2nd or 3rd, it got even worse after the dealer did a total fluid flush. I brought it back to the dealer who drove it and said he noticed a little slag, but wanted to keep it overnight to test it when it was cold. He said if it's what he thinks it is it may need a complete rebuild to the tune of $1800!
My friend who is on his second Maxima says this is a common problem with Maxima's because the engines are too powerful for the transmissions. Is that normal for a tranny with 65k on it? I don't tow, drag, or anything. This Max is babied!

HELP!

maximumtuning.net does it for 1700$ heh.. if its really that bad then you might as well do a 5spd swap if you plan on keeping the car.

Koni or anyone else with this problem

Did you get it fixed? What was the problem? How much did it cost?

My 2 - 3 shifts are slow and the engine revs.

Somebody has to know this.

Is it caused by a weak solenoid in the valve body?
Or is it more internal, like the clutch plates?

I've been searching and only found answers like, "Time to rebuild your tranny". I'd like to narrow the problem down so I can fix it my self, if possible.

You'd have to be a tech to fix a Maxima Auto trans.
It has about a dozen computerized clutches in it to tell it how fast your going and when to shift. I had mine rebuilt twice and the owner of the AAMCO I took it to said it't probably the hardest trans. he has to work on because of all the gadgets in it. The clutches in yours may have started welding together so it may be time for a rebuild. That's what mine did the first time. Felt like it was slipping like a stick going from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, and couple of days later I had to have it towed to the tranny shop. Cost me $1800 at AAMCO w/ lifetime warranty.

well..its a very commun maxima problem, if you have automatic and your shift is a little hard on cold temp, sliping shifts, etc its easy to know this:
1. you Valve Body is bad(valves or solenoids for sure).
2. Maybe your torque converter and disc are moving to a cementary.
3. Cold conditions=less pressuare for your tranny=hard and slipping shiftings on it.
4. IF some of your internal parts are going bad, so dirty is in your valve body, for results the dirty or little parts will stuck on the holes(where the valves are).

I know all this things after 2 Valves body replace, and a tranny rebuilt(right know my car is on the shop again..they made a little mistake on the tranny so they are fix under warrenty).

For those who rebuilt the tranny, buy the hayden tranny cooler!!! long life for your tranny and 1800 bucks in your pocket in the future

my tranny cooked to death like a lobster, my clutches were burnt and my gaskets were letting all the pressure out of the tranny causing it to slip.

good luck

How much on average does it cost to have the valve body replaced? Does the transmission need to be pulled to replace the valve body? My 96 auto is shifting hard, esp. when it's cold.

thanks

ok you can go to a junkyard and find a valve body, it cost like 300 bucks, new will cost you like 850 at courtesyparts.com

You just have to remove the cover under the tranny to remove the valve body, is not an easy job(cause you should remove the exaclty bolts etc and the VB is a little heavy.

For advice....if you have problems with your VB you most check the magnets on the cover(you should buy the haynes manual, it really helps) to see if theres a little piece of metal etc, if you have it, maybe you should check the internal parts of the tranny cause one of them is already very used and need to be replaced. WHY? cause you can buy the new or used Valve Body and it will damage again all for the micro parts that comes from the tranny and stuck on the valve holes.

That was my experiecne about the trannys. I hope this helps.
