Midas Cost Me 275.00 And Didnt Fix S**t!!!!(Kinda long)

Some of you guys may remember a previous post about a gas smell in my car and three differnt mechanics couldnt find the problem. Well I took my car to Midas on Tuesday to see if they could figure it out the guy couldnt find anything and told me that maybe it is a problem in the computer somewhere and he could do a computer diagnostic to see if anything showed up. I told him that I would come back another day (I didnt think that the comp had anything to do with it so I didnt want to pay him 80 for nothing) I came home that day and searched on the org. I found earlier post about the old rubber fuel lines, evap cannister, and fuel rail to the injectors leaking. I went back to Midas two days later and told the guy that I didnt want a comp diagnostic I just wanted him to check those three things he told me that I would still have to pay a normal diagnostic fee which was 75.00 so I said whatever because I just wanted it checked. Twenty minutes later the guy comes back out and says oh yeah your evaporation canister is bad. I went to the Nissan dealership paid 150.00 and ordered one. I took the cannister back to the Midas a couple days later and they charged me 50.00 to put it on. After I left the Midas I got about two blocks away and started to smell the gas again but I thought that maybe the smell was just in my interior so I just kept driving about ten miles later the smell got really strong but by now the Midas was already closed. Im going to go back on Monday and I want to be reimbursed my 275.00 so that I can take my car somewhere else. I tried to call their Consumer relations line but they arent in the office until Monday. What are the chances of these motherfu**ers giving me my cash back???

Not very good they'll probably say you got a defective Canister. and that they aren't responsible for parts failure since you brought your own parts and have been ****tating (sic) to them how to fix your car.
Besides why in the world would you take your car to midas?
Everything they touch turns to gold...... For them!
Find a good local mechanic and let him diagnose it. and don't tell him what exactly is wrong tell him the problems and what you've done to this point.
if you tell him what to do you'll possibly **** him off and he'll only fix exactly what you said is wrong. nothing else including that stupid little piece of hose that just isn't tight enough

The guy told me to get my own part since it would take him a week to get the part in and I didnt dictate to them I just asked them if they can check three specific things since he didnt see anything. I dont think there was ever anything wrong with the canister. I think the guy couldnt figure out what was wrong so he just wanted to make some money off of something.

Well Midas did tell you that the evap. container was bad...so that was their "diagnosis." I don't know if the evap container was bad or not. You may need to get a different one, and go back there one more time. If it still isn't fixed with a diff container, then it obviously isn't the evap container and they were wrong and owe you a refund, or at least a partial. On something like evap system, I'd probably go to the Nissan dealer.

When I went in there I said I have a strong gas smell in the cabin of my car. When the guy wrote up the diagnostic which I still have he wrote gas leak/smell caused by evap canister. I only bought the canister because he told me to.

just go there and make a lot of noise...tell them u will report them to the local Better Business Beaureu (cant spell that last word there) and the DMV . and if u paid with a credit card...your credit card company may reimburse u the whole amount if u tell them u tried to get the money back and they refused and that they did a f**ked up job.

i gotta have my exhaust studs changed on the rear manifold and i have the lowest quote from them but i am kinda iffy about going there for the job.

Hi guys, I just have to put in my two cents. I personally wouldn't go to those hackers for ANYTHING!! Maybe JUST a muffler, nothing more!! All the guys that work at these 5 thousand muffler shops are the C and D mechanics of the world. If they were decent, they would be somewhere else besides a muffler shop! They would be at a dealership making good money. Computer diagnostics, I would leave strictly to the dealer, the people who know your car and have probably worked on hundreds of them with the same problem. I have a friend who works on my Max, but he is a Nissan Master Tech, and works at a Nissan dealer. He works on hundreds of 3rd Gen Maxs and knows the car upside down and inside out. Save yourself alot of aggravation and go somewhere that knows Nissan, THE DEALER!! You definitely pay more, but 9 times out of 10, the result is better to have people work and diagnose your car that have seen it before and probably have seen hundreds of them like it.
I hate seeing people get screwed by these sideshow mechanic shops.
Good luck man getting your $ back, remember squeaky wheel gets the grease!!

Yeah, the only thing that Midas is good for is their lifetime warranty on their muffler installs.

Story:
My dad had a Midas muffler setup installed on our Camaro back in 1973, and kept the original receipt. Well, a few years ago (like July of 2000 I believe) we took the Camaro in to get it fixed because most everything was rusted out.

Free exhaust install 27 years later. What a deal eh?

Dealers definitely don't know everything.
Diagnostics for problems that aren't throwing Codes is not something they're better at than a regular (non-franchise) local repair shop with good mechanic.
I get a good laugh when people go to the dealer get it "fixed" only to have it reoccur again because they fixed by code rather than diagnosis.
Had a good laugh when a friends olds was running poor it set off the check engine light with a code of no fire on half of his cylinders!
Autozone tried to sell him 4 injectors! because that's what the "code" was.
He actually needed spark plugs.

If he had just paid someone to diagnose it in the first place he could've saved himself some money

Im going to go there tomorrow after I get out of class. I am going to put their comsumer affairs phone number on speed dial in my cell phone and when they refuse to do anything I'll call the number and let them explain to me why they wont fix something that they diagnosed wrong and cost me a lot of money. That way they are kinda on the spot and cant say that they didnt say this or say that.

That's a crazy story. You should contact them about doing a commercial. Kudos to your dad for keeping the receipt.

Ok Midas are only half idiots for diagnosing the wrong thing. The true di**heads are the installers at Best Buy since they drilled a damn hole through my gas tank. I have had headaches for the past two months and I took my car back to them before and they said that there was no screws near the gas tank. They took the insurance damage claim for my gas tank and they are going to reimburse me for it but I only have one question. Do I Have A Legal Case.

You can probably sue them and win for endangering you life. and the life of those around you.
What in the world and why inthe world did you let Best Buy install in your trunk FLOOR?

ilovemyse, heck ya you have a case. A lawyer would love that one-you could have blown up, or at least been injured due to fumes. Get a new gas tank!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that it's not an evap canister, but a simple return line that goes from the gas filler to the gas tank. This recently wnet out (dry rot) on my moms Maxima, and it caused a heavy gas odor. It was an easy fix, and very cheap. You might check that, and if that fixes your problem, you can make a case for getting your money back.

175.00 isnt that bad. Some places were quoting me like 350 bucks and the junkyard wanted 200 for a used one. I am currently searching to see if I can find a place that can weld over the screw hole or find some other way to patch it up so that I can just keep the 700 bucks when they give it to me. But if not then I will definitely take that price. I'll let you know. Thanks.

Permatex makes a putty for repiaring gas tanks. But you'll have to drop the tank no matter what to fix the holes

Funny story: My friend was welding his gas tank on his Ford Ranger then all of a sudden you see a big burst of flames. This idiot forgot that the gas tank actually holds gas. But the only thing you can say is how dumb can a 17 year old be. This kid has a 3.8 gpa but no common sense. How many people actually did that before?
