Hi again....

1989 Maxima....

The following has happened twice to me in the last few weeks. Atfer a few miles of driving the temp gauge gets all the way into the hot area. Then, for no apparent reason, it drops down to normal very quickly. Could this be a bad thermostat? The radiator was put in over the summer, but its cold here now. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. One more thing, the heater was not pumping out hot air until the guage dropped to normal. Both times this has happened I drove the car as normal for the remainder of the day... week... month, with no issues.

sounds like your antifreeze is either low, or the thermostat is no good. it also could be air in the lines. there is a bleeder valve on the intake that will let out air in the lines.

 

most of the time, that's caused by air in the system. it'll get really hot and the temp gauge skyrockets.. then the water hits the sensor again and the temp goes back down.

Mine's actually the other way around though. must be an electrical problem... whenever I'm running at high throttle positions, the gauge drops.. the farther I push the gas, the farther the needle drops.. it's like a backwards throttle pos sensor!

The fluid is full, the line is blead. Could it be that the thermostat was stuck shut or open? Because if the fluid was low, it would overheat all the time right, or if the thermostat was broke it would also do it all the time. And also, the part about the heat working after the gauge starts to go down... usually if a car is overheating you have plenty of heat in the system right?

Are maxima thrermostats all this expensive? (Like the one on ebay above!) ($50.00 ouch!)

 

Thermostat should be 1/2 that.
A worn thermostat will open at the wrong temperatures without any real consistancy.

overheating and having plenty of heat are not necessarily related.
