Hey, basically my power antenna broke off due to a carwash

After the carwash it just dangled there next to the car, the mast broke near the bottom.
I didn't want to drive like that, so I just pulled the white plastic wire out that runs to the motor.
I have a new mast, but my problem is: I cannot for the life of me get what is left of the old mast out!
I have tried everything and this POS 1/4 inch of metal is just plain stuck in there.

First of all, am I correct in assuming that since I can't pull the piece out, that I should take the motor out, so I can get it from the other direction?

If so, can somebody who has done this tell me how long I am looking at here? I took a look inside and it looks like I'll have to take out a bunch of stuff like the jack and its holder. Is this going to take me forever?

p.s. yes, I have searched and read all posts about power antennas
