I have a 03 SE. Its still stock
I am starting off with handling mods and want to replace my rims. So far with some research, I picked

1) Volk CE28N 17x7 (Set costs about $1800 and each wheel weighs about 13lbs)
2) Enkei RPF1 17x7 (Set costs about $1100 and each wheel weighs about 15.7lbs)

Basically, I am looking for lightweight wheels that are strong and last a long time. I am not sure if lightweight wheels should be my priority considering that Maxima is not exactly a race car. Do light weight wheels like these make a big difference on a Maxima? Any comments?

As you can see, my budget is between $1000 and $2000. I really don't want to spend $2000 on wheels alone but will if its really really worth it. I like Enkei RPF1 because they are cheap and they are supposedly STRONG! On the other hand, I can spend 70% more and get one of the lightest wheels in the world, Volks CE28N, but not sure if its worth it. Any comments?

Some of you who know a lot more about wheels suggest the right size and width that I would enjoy... like in terms of performance and handling what size is the best?

Can you guys suggest any other wheels based on my criteria and budget?

 

Go wider. 17x7.5 or 8.

 

Any reason why you recommend against them? I've read only good things about these wheels...

why not go less than 8" wide?

 

I am wondering why you would consider an aftermarket wheel and remain with the 7" width, and limit your selection of tire choice? Not a slam....just curious? I am trying to find a good all-season tire, as I think my OEM Potenzas, are not going to do well, in the upcoming Colorado winter.....but selection is very limited mainly due to the 7" width.

 

I live in Buffalo, NY. We get our share of snow and I read somewhere that narrower tires/rims handle better in snow... but I just decided to go with 8 or 8.5, I will let my tires worry about snow handling.

 

I think that style of Volk wheels is best left for Hondas. Plus with you only getting 17" size they will look smaller than your stock wheels. My suggestion is look for other wheels, neither of them are really going to get it done on a 2k+ Max.

 

Dude you gotta chill. I live in NY and probably be moving to TX in a few months... far far away from you. You'll still be pimpin in Cali. Its not like these wheels are a secret. I've seen a few around here and I live in boring Buffalo, NY. Don't worry, even if I get these wheels, I won't be putting up pics. of my wheels in my sig.

To tell you the truth, I don't like the looks of this wheel, I just like them for the fact that they are strong, durable, inexpensive and not to mention light! If I can find an alternate set of wheels in this price range with these qualitites that look better, I will definitely jump on the new ones... but so far the search came up empty.



I heard SSR TypeC have a lot of quality issues. I've read a lot of stories with bent rims etc.

I made up mind to get 8 or 8.5. What's stopping me from getting a 10.5? Apart from the obvious differences, what's the difference between 8 and 10.5? What advantages will I have from that wide rims? Also, what are the disadvantages?

I have never understood going from a 17" stock wheel to a 17" aftermarket wheel. I am guessing you plan on using your new wheels with stock tires to save money? Bad idea dude.......

 

17s weren't my first choice. I was however, able to get these for just fifty dollars after selling my stocks. 19's will come when I need new tires.

 

7.5 is OK because you can go with a 235/45/17.

 

That's what I plan on doing (except I'll be getting ContiExtreme). Reasons: 1) keeping more sidewall (vs 18") for better ride (you probably don't have many frost heaves in AZ 2) Going with 18 lb rims vs 24 lb OEM rim 3) Better looking than OEM 4) Cheaper to replace 17" tires than 18" 5) Going with 7.5" rims so I can "leagally" fit is 235/45 tire

 

There are tons of wheel choices out there. At least narrow it down to a specific style or two.

 

10.5 will likely stick out past the fenders or contact the suspension.

Wider wheels allow for wider tires = more contact patch = better grip for cornering or launching.

Keep your stockers for winter use.
