ticking after start-up (search is down)

anyone know what could cause this?? it sounds like its coming from the left side of the engine.........

at a cold start, my rpms get up over 1.5k and once under 1k, the ticking stops.

any suggestions or links to a similar thread.........thanks

The timing chain tensioner gets tension off of oil pressure. When the oil is cold the tensioner doesn't work as well when it gets old.

The "problem" can be solved by replacing the tensioner itself. I don't think its 100% necessary though.

Why not heat up the car and then drive?

he said left side of engine. timing tensioner is on right side. iacv is on left side.

If you'd like to get technical, the left side of the engine is the side closest to the radiator. That whole bank.

I'm assuming he's talking about "the left side of the engine while looking at it from the front of the car."

Left side as looking at the engine. It's probably because the oil is cold and can't flow up to the tensioner fast enough. ESPECIALLY if you are using normal dino oil. Synthetics would probably cure this

remote start my friend. although you have to use your factory keyless unless the installer wont mind opening up the driver door panel and reach the circuit thru there....

Umm, remote start, manual start, running start, it won't really matter. It's still cold out. You just won't HEAR the ticking because you are away from the car.

the tensioner sound is a horrible thing if you've never heard it....i don't think anyone would describe it as a "tick". it would be a horrible rattle chain-saw like sound right when it starts, then calm down to a tick over a second or two....this tick then takes some time to go away as the oil warms up and bleeds the air out of the tensioner. He has the right year care for this problem though, but if some one tells me "left" i think driver side. Anyway, if it is the tensioner the problem will only continue to get worse....it can't be good for the chain to be running loose. A good quality oil filter is the first thing to try...after that its about replacing parts. Synthetic or petroleum oil will not make a difference....believe me...i lived through this on two cars now.

Mine started as a tick, and then got progressively worse. Try 30 weight if your running 40 now, or switch to synthetic, this worked for me.

It could just be your IACV moving in and out to adjust the idle on a cold start. If that is what it is then don't worry, it's just doing it's job

yes, its the left side if i were facing the engine.

thanks for the replys......... i'm glad to hear its not a piston or valve or anything else deep in the caverns of the engine. or could it be??

it started to get worse after i changed my oil this weekend -- i'm using dino. but it also started to get cold right after that.

thanks again.
