Does anyone else's Maxima do this??

Ok everyone, now that it's getting cold out I have been noticing that when I start my car the rpm's jump up and down like crazy, they jump up to about 1100 rpm's then back down to about 4 or 500 and it does this 3-4 times on my initial start. Sometimes my car will even shutoff like it's not getting enough gas. The only temp solution I have find to this is to give it some gas on my initial startup and I have no problems. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem and why it might be happening. BTW I would have searched for this but for some reason I'm not allowed to. Any help would be good.

I had the same problem......I changed my TPS first, but that did not help. I cleaned my Throttle Body and I have not had the problem since. I would recommend cleaning your TB first. Just a couple of $$ for a can of TB Cleaner.

Or it oculd be a vacuum leak - buy a vacuum gauge for $10 (they're good to have around anyway) and make sure your vacuum is reading 17-20Hg.

Maybe you have a sticking IACV valve. Cleaning it does wonders for idle RPM's

Hey thanks for all the help guys, I'm gonna check all that stuff out and if it continues, I'm gonna have to blame the coldness in the morning.

Same thing with my max. Just haven't had the time to fool with it. I have this problem no matter what its like outside. I search the forum a few weeks back and njmaxseltd suggested a few possible fixes.

If I have time today between stuffing my face and watching football, I'll try both and see if this fixes the issue. Let me know if you figure out something else. Its so annoying having to pump the gas pedal to start the car.

its most likely a combination of the throttle body being dirty and the Ivac...cleaning both will make your car respond better (5 speed) and help the idle settle faster

Yeah, between stuffing my face, watching football and drinking some coronas...I might find some time to go out there and look.

The thing I can't figure out is why it only happens when its really cold. I will probably clean all the things everyone has been mentioning. It probably needs to be done anyway.

Well, I bought some TB cleaner and cleaned the TB, that damn thing was F'ng filthy. Dirt was still coming out even after I wiped it, so I cleaned it like 2 more times and finally all the dirt was gone. I checked the MAF and wirings and nothing seemed to be wrong. After I was done, car started right up, no Rpm jumps, everything is back to normal. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
