Please help me diagnose this noise

I have this creaking noise coming from behind my dash Sounds close to teh firewall. I have the auto climate control.(it is NOT the motorized vents moving from top to bottom) The climate control does not have to be engaged in order for the sound to be heard- There is no particular rhythm to the noise, it is erratic, as most creaks are. It does not get faster with the rpms, but the engine drowns it out once i hit about 1200 rpms, you can hear it when the car sits idle at a light. I cannot find it under the hood because of the sound of the engine itselfovdefr. The noise is not in effect at all times however. I tried to explain it as best as i can. Please advise- Thanks
EDIT!!!! The best way to describe this noise is it sounds EXACTLY what a computer hard drive sounds like when it is processing something. That groaning creaking sound!

It's your power steering pump.A very common problem Just ignore it and drive till it fails.

take care,

Jay[/QUHow long do you think it would take for it to completely fail? When it does fail, do I just lose power steering? Or does something catastrophic happen? I have a warranty. I brought it in b/c maxeffect said that my p/s pump was on its way out- but how long does it take to die? I dont want to be stranded. I want the dealer to replace the pump, but they are always relunctant to change anything. How can they tell by looking at it? Thanks!

If it is your power steering pump, did you verify and see if the sound changes when you turn the wheel? I'm not trying to negate jayanth's suggestion, but that should be easy to pinpoint and even fix. If it is your pump, then it could be simply because you have air in the system.

Dwapenyi is right.I have this noise for the past 3 years and i have done everything possible to eliminate it including adding LUCAS treatment. It did help a bit!
My power steering is still functional and have never noticed any difference.Try replacing the fluid and adding LUCAS if you want to.If you have a warranty get it replaced.Yes its not easy but you might get lucky.

As far as i know it should not fail just like that.I'll remove any air in it tommorow as Dwapenyi suggested and see if the noise reduces or goes away completely.

If you have a warranty Get it done....

take care and good luck,

Jay

Okay, i think it may be air in the p/s system. When I brought the car in, they said that they flushed the system, air probably got in there when they flushed it, hence the creaking noise (YOU GUYS ARE GOOD!) How do you get air out of the P/S system? Can i do it myself? The weather is horrible here in Brooklyn and I don't feel like going to the dealer if aI can do it alone. Thanks guys!

I THINK NOT SURE THOUGH,

open hood, open reservoir cap, start car, rotate steering few times left to right and right to left, close cap, test drive.

i flushed, cleaned, refilled last week i'll try doing this and hope it works...

take care,
Jay

I have a similar dash noise, and it turned out to actually be one of the defroster vents. It might be worth looking at.

Thanks All!
The noise has seem to gone away on it's own, Perhaps the air in the system went out? Who knows- the noise is gone, or at least it is for now.
