Short Throw Shifter
1. isnt 4" alot? I just installed a STS that was only about an inch shorter than stock (maybe alittle more, i dunno), and it made a big difference. I dont really like having to reach down for the shifter.
2. why take it to a shop?

even a noobie could do it 2 hours with simple hand tools
cutting the shifter wont give you a shorter throw just a shorter shifter
i rather enjoy my long throws and tall shifter.
i think matt93se moved the rubber ball that keeps it in place to make it shorter but had to make a dent in the cat shield to fit. that's probably more than you wanted to know.

I hacked off 2" of my shifter, and it made a bit of a difference in shifter throw. I think it's about 4" of throw now compared to like 7" as it was before. Plus, whenever I shfited into 1st, I hit my volume **** on my alpine. Now, its just below that. Plus, having a boat oar shifter didn't look all that great with the **** that I had on it.
Here's a shot of my shifter: http://launch2k.com/maxima/interiorshot.jpg
