autozone checked my CEL light for free.

my dad's 96 GLE had the CEL (Check Engine Light) on so I did the .org method, counting the # of long and short pulses..
so after triple checking it, i got 0505 (No Failure Recorded/Detected)

My friend told me his CEL was on and he went to Autozone and they checked it for him for free.. So i went and did it myself
and i had three problems:
1) P0325 - Knock Sensor
2) P0446 - Emission Control Vent system (need a new Gas Cap)
3) P01400 - Auxillary Emission Controls (EGR circuit needs to be cleaned)

SO maybe you should find Autozone and ask them..

P1400 - 1005

do you have a haynes manual ? or you can use the online chiltin manual link found in the faq's

1005
1005 is EGRC Solenoid valve

The majority of my information about Diagnostic Trouble Codes comes from my '99 Maxima factory service manual. Unfortunately, DTC 1005 is not in that book. Starting in '99 the Maxima engine uses a step-motor type of EGR valve and with that change, the DTCs changed.
The Chilton and Haynes manuals provide a little information about the EGR Solenoid Valve.
The test procedure for this part is found in the Chilton repair manual (page 4-11) and the Haynes repair manual (page 6-20). Test the valve and replace if necessary.

This malfunction is not an emergency but should be resolved fairly soon (7-10 days). An inoperative EGR valve may result in engine pinging and a variety of driveability complaints.

Here in California they are not allowed to check the codes anymore. They and Kragens use to do it for free, but when my sister took her 2000 Maxima when she had a CEL, the employees at both place said that they could no longer do that due to California law. It ended up being an O2 sensor. She had the extended warranty at the dealer, but she wanted to know what it was before she took it in. On her car the CEL can't be read or reset like on our cars, it has to be hooked up to one of the scanning machines. Next time I go by one of those places I will ask exactly what that law is.

If AutoZone doesn't do it b/c of the CA law, go to a small shop that gives a free estimate. They'll check the code for free

that law is probably just another way for you to spend money by being forced to take it to a stealership or shop, lol.. i dunno, just my $.02
