I go today to an auto repair shop to see how much a tune up cost and to see if i needed one..We'll he diagnosed the engine and said that ive been running on 5 cyl since i bought the car..he checked the pressure in one of the cylinders and said i was only coming out with 75 pounds when im supposed to be coming out with over 100..i wanted to cry..he tells me he has to rebuild the motor and its gonna cost me $1500 after i just spent $1800 on a damn tranny..plus he told me that when i bought the car that they pushed the miles back..i gotta go talk to the D**K that sold me the car and probably bring his *** to court..man i dont know wha to do with this thing anymore

I'm sorry to hear that. I always recommend having a used car fully inspected and have a compression test on all cylinders before purchasing a used car.

Buying a car is not as easy as one might think

I started hunting for my car in August 2000 and did not purchase one till October 2000.

It is very, very tough to find a vehicle that has been maintained well. I drove as much as 70 miles to see a vehicle only to find that it ran like CRAP!.

Doing a compression test, though easy to do, is not welcomed by dealers or many private seller's.

Before, buying my car I test drove it, and looked at two spark plugs to give me an idea of the engine.

So far, I have been blessed. But who knows what may lay in the future?

Re: damn thieves

Now wait a minute. This doesn't add up. How does the mechanic know the mileage has been turned back? My Maxima has over 200k and I don't think the compression is low. There is a way of checking the history of the car, but I can't remember who provides the service.

Why does the enjine need rebuilting? The check after a low compression is add about a teaspoon of oil thru the sparkplug hole and see if the compression improves. If it does, it is bad rings. If not, it is a sticky valve, which may not be so bad. Usually if 2 cylinders are bad, it is a bad head gasket.

Keep in touch and let us know how this plays out!

Tom

omg..story of my cars life...

I 100% feel for you , I had serious issues with my max ever since I bought her, I had my tranny rebuilt also, everything in my car has practicly been replaced...I have cylinder issues also , when I lost my timing belt I had the compression test done, maybe it was I had a few valves not running at full, does that make sense, or is it my cylinder? Eith er way..its been that way also since I bought it, I dont care tho...Im over it. Im so used to problems, that it doesnt even matter anymore, she dies so often, I quit crying, I just sit there in my car, and Im like hmmmm...ok...well I guess Im not going anywhere today....and my speedo is messed up too...but its cuz it stopped at like 60k, so the speedo actually says I have 83k on it, but I have 143k...wasnt intetional tho, just broke.

And to think I plan on getting another one...maxima whipped!

Re: omg..story of my cars life...

I hope your max isn't a lemon... kinda sounds like it with all the problems you've had. I put 150K miles on my old max and never had a problem with anything (except I had to replace a window regulator, $60). Also, when you refer to 60k,83k on the speedo.. it's actually your odometer

Odometer

I had my speedometer and odometer go out on my max just before I left for a long trip. I told my family not to drive it while I was gone but what do you know my folks lone it out to my sister and brother in law for a trip they took to the coast. So now the mileage is way off (Agghhhh resale down the toilet!!!!) At anyrate my probelm was easily fixed and it didn't even require a new part. The speed sensor or what ever the thing under the hood is called came loose. All I had to do was push it back in and give it a few taps. Fixed both speedo and odometer for about 10k miles and then had to do it again and its holding fine for about 20k plus now. I love the things that are free in life.

on your title

I am just wondering--and I don't know too much about other states, but in NY, usually when the odometer reading on a car is not the actual mileage, the title of the car indicates that "mileage is not actual"--which means that some stuff has been done to it.

Btw, if it is a mom and pop shop--and if they are a dealer (witha dealer license)--I would contact the local DMV and they can definetely help you out. There is a dept. just for that stuff.
good luck =)

Well...sorry to hear that...also..

Did you take the car to your mechanic/an independan mechanic before buying it?? If not, all I can say is "you asked for it".

It costs between $50-$75 for a good mechaninc to do a pre-purchase inspection and it can tell you VOLUMES about the condition of the car, hopw it has been treated, what needs ot be taken care of. etc.

We took 4 Max's to my mech. before we found one good enough. Someobdy probably could have spotted the engine problem, the tranny problems AND the odometer roolback if you had only coughed up $50-$75 before the sale. I can't imagine why people don't do this. It is expensive BUT...compared to the $1800 and $1500 for the two repairs you'll be doing its dirt cheap! I know being an "enthusiast" we like to think we can find problem cars or problem spots on our own, but truth be told, anytime you can have a mechaninc that looks at them day in and day out check out your car, they are gonna see 100 things you didn't even if you know your stuff.

That sucks dood. Good luck in court.

Check your bill of sale. My bill of sale has a clause in it that certifies the odometer to have an accurate reading and to not have been tampered with. Yours might have the same. If this is the case, you have now have legal options you can take. Also check your bill of sale for any kind of warranty.

Finally, you might want to check out http://www.prepaidlegal.com. The have a law resource library available that you might be able to gather some useful information from.

I hope this helps.
