turbo vs supercharger $$$$?

I just recently bought a 95 Maxima SE 5 speed and am looking to do some mods to the engine...wanna keep the car looking as stock as possible. I have a couple questions:

1. Whats the exact difference between a supercharger and a turbo?

2. If I decide to get a supercharger or a turbo....how much are they? and what mods do I need to get (ie. clutch/gauges/valves).

3. Seeing as how I am living in Ottawa, Canada where our winters define cold...should I remove it during the winter months? should I be expecting any problems?

4. Does anyone have any experience with 4th gen maximas and installing superchargers/turbo?

anything helps

Thanks in advance...

You got some research to do if you are asking what the difference between sc and turbo is. Almost want to say "are you sure you know what you are doing once you got the boost?" This is where most people make mistakes and blow the engine cause they are not well educated in the pros and cons and what not to do and what to do.

To answer your 2nd question, cost? Turbo is more. SC you can get used for 2000-2500 and is bolt on ready to go power. Clutch and Gauges are going to cost in a range, depends on what type of clutch you want, how much power you want it to hold, what type of gauges you want, how expensive you want them? I mean Clutch and gauges can run from 400 to over 1000.

3. Definetely SC if you plan on removing it for winter, TC aint that easy to just remove. All the piping has to be removed as well.

Search functionality has nothing to do here, Its just a general automotive question that can be found simply by searching the net or better yet going to Howstuffworks.com

True, true, but still I wish that the search was available cuz there is a whole bunch of important info which is out there that I remember from back in the day.

1. Whats the exact difference between a supercharger and a turbo?

Everything. (www.howstuffworks.com)

2. If I decide to get a supercharger or a turbo....how much are they? and what mods do I need to get (ie. clutch/gauges/valves).

It depends, I'd say from 3000-6000, depending on how much power you want to make.
Depending on the Generation of Maxima you have, there will be some things you should look into, and make sure they come with your kit. If your going to Turbo your car, make sure your getting a complete fuel solution, (injectors, fuel pressure regulator, fuel management, fuel pump etc.) As far as internals go as long as you dont want over 400WHP or so then everythings safe. But if you want to raise your rev limiter look into higher duration cams, new valvesprings, and new valves.
A clutch is always recommended, stock ones aren't meant to be boosted. As far as gauges you'll wnat the basics to start out with. Boost, EGT, Oil Temp. Those are all essential. Some things I'd personally recommend is a Wide-Band O2 Sensor.

3. Seeing as how I am living in Ottawa, Canada where our winters define cold...should I remove it during the winter months? should I be expecting any problems?

Maybe boost spiking? But colder climates are better for boosted cars.

4. Does anyone have any experience with 4th gen maximas and installing superchargers/turbo?

We do, if you need any help drop us a line at ssrengineering@aol.com

Bro, don't even get one. You have so much and so far to go, it's pointless. Really, you don't remove either in the winter. I tell you this as a friend, you are far to new to jump on this, perticuly for a problem car like the maxima.

Superchargers and turbos when you get extreme have caused a few problems, for manly people. Your generel mods like exahaust and intake crap are fine. With that said if you where to just go buy say the stillen kit, then you prob be fine, it's when you get extreme with it that problems have been happning.

Such as, blown belts, blown motor, dead tranny, poor fuel casing manyl problems, blown gaskets, car not running at all, and on and on.

It's not that these problems come with a blown engine, it takes alot of work to make things work, but the maxima, seems to be real touchy about what gets done to it.

plain and simple with FI on any n/a motor...

more power = more things breaking or more money to prevent them from breaking(but in the long run they'll still probably break )
