It appears that after driving for 10 or so miles on the highway and then riding around town I get this STRONG smell of gas inside my car. Now I do believe that I might have a cracked coil and I think if this is causing the engine to miss, and then retard the timing that that might be causing the smell.

What I want to know is there anything else that may be causing this? To repeat I don't smell it all the time...only after driving at 60+ mph on the highway.

Thanks

A misfire is supposed to turn on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (a/k/a Check Engine Light, Service Engine Soon light).

Most times a gasoline smell is caused by a gasoline leak.

Yeah after hard accelleartion I get that too. It's a sulfur like smell. I figure there is a lot of unburned gas under hard accelleration and the cat converter is really breaking down the gases into water, and that's the reactions smell. My friend's maxima does the same thing.

It's not sulfur

I know what sulfur smells like...it's definately the gas, like someone spilt a liter of gas inside my car....I think I am going to check on the fuel filter, but I just changed that like 5 months ago.

Finding a fuel leak

Search for fuel leaks by sight and odor. However, some fuel leaks are so
tiny that they escape the human senses. One way to find them is to have
your mechanic use his exhaust gas analyzer. Switch the tester to HC
(hydrocarbons) and then pass the probe along the entire fuel system,
starting at the fuel tank, forward along the fuel lines, past the filter,
all around the engine, then along the return line and back to the tank.
The tester is far more sensitive than the human eye or nose. When the
probe passes near a tiny leak the reading will abruptly increase.
