Opinions on my Turbo project.

I have now started my long awaited turbo project!! My first step was installing my new engine with 18K miles on it. Now I am a hard working guy that also goes to college, therefore I don't have $3-4K do drop in one shot, but I do get a pretty beefy refund check from the gov'ment every few months. This was what I planed to do in stage II. I want to build my exhaust manifold (I have access to a welder and lift), and purchase my turbo, FP, and FMU. With all this done I am thinking of running my turbo without an intercooler and only running 3-4LBS on an everyday basis and spray my NX 35shot at the track to be able to run maybe 6 LBS. This way I can do things in stages. I can have a running vehicle with added performance while I do the fabing on my piping, and also while I save up for my intercooler, BOV, and SAFC II. Any comments? Suggestions?

you really need to put the blow off valve on the list to be done in stage one. from what ive read its not good for a turbo to be used without a blow off or bypass valve

and yes the rest sounds good yous hould ahve no problem running 4lbs non intercooled

you could probly run 4pbs without a fmu and fuel pump to but its best to get those out of the way

just get a cheap one off of a 1g dsm for like 50$

well a BOV is not all that expensive in the grand scheme of things, and of course I have to buy a waste gate.

why don't you wait on spraying till you get an IC...be careful with doing things in stages and not considering other aspects which you might think aren't necessary at the time, but really are

well I would be sraying more to cool the intake temp. I would not do anything without tuning. I am just a bit impatient, and I am trying to form a plan to accomodate my nature.

Just save an extra month and get the IC at the same time. The amt of work involved in changing from an non-IC to an IC setup is considerable. It's about $350 for a good sized 6" tall IC off ebay and another 50-100 for pipes. You would have to plan ahead well enough that the turbo will have enough room to run either way. I'd hate to have to tear up a running car just to add the IC. Also to be able to change, boost levels you will need a boost controller.

If you're already spraying, just stay that way a while longer and prep the fuel system and vacuum system, etc. Wire up all the requisite gauges and relocate the battery until you have the oney. Then do it all at once. If you're skilled at welding you can get the car running in 2-3 days from there.

Not to sound alarmist but if you don't have the cash to cover it all at once, turbo might not be the best choice for upgrades. Costs tend to overrun pretty quickly on these builds and getting stuck w/a broken car and no money is a risky way to go.

*buzzer* wrong answer.......thats how things go booom

IMO pace yourself, impatience when dealing with FI = spending more in the long run(Mishap already potined one thing out)...going from non-ic to IC is a waste of time and money IMO...do it at once

spraying "to cool" is still spraying nitrous into the motor however you look at it. thus increased chances of detonation is increased EVEN more so since you have no IC and are boosting

one other thing you guys need to take into consideration is that I am not an irrational 18 year old kid. I am 30 years old, and I have a pretty fair knowledge of how an internal combustion engine works, not to mention I have the best turbo guy in the state helping me with this. You are probably right about the IC issue, I am just going to have to have it custom built for my application. I have some inovative ideas for this project, and hopefuly some of these ideas will help in pioneering new knowledge about turbo Maxima's.
Also Impatient does not equal stupid. I would never ever do anything to my car unless it was as safe as it could be. I do like to see results fast but never at the expense of safety.

Good luck with all that, I hope that welder you have is at least a MIG welder. What kind of components are you planning on using? What are you using for intercooler piping? If your a novice welder I suggest anything other then Aluminum, something like mild steel.

Look. Nigel has a group deal on a PFI Turbo kit going through March for $3999. This includes everything you need in your kit. I say save until March and just do it the right way. Just my opinon.

18 years old or 30 years old...fair knowledge or not....I don't know your experiences with FI, but my opinion from a semi-experienced standpoint is impatience is not someting you want to mix or put i the same sentecne with FI. good luck

With my hookups, this project will be cheaper than that and better quality. (i.e. no crush bends) Also I have some different ideas that I want to follow with this kit. Thanks for the help though.

MIG welder, Mild steel piping. The turbo will be a T3/T04, the exact configuration is yet to be determined. I have not decided on which waste gate and BOV I want yet.

i sure hope he has i wire feed welder if he had a stick and is just novice those welds would proboly look like **** and leak all over. i know when i barrowed my grandpas stick welder i could bearly strick an arc more or less lay a decent bead down. then i bought my MIG and and oh man what a diference theres no comparason although i know a guy with a tig and ive seen him weld with that and the welds are just butiful and strong as hell. i know whos going to be welding the bung on my oil pan if i deside not to tap it

If you want quality I'd suggest at least a Tial 38mm if not a 46mm (Thats what we are using on our Maxima Turbo Kit). I've heard tremendous horror stories on how bad deltagates and turbonetic units are.

I must be wrong. I thought I remember that being an issue a year or so ago. I know the PFI kit is a great kit. It has been proven. I just want to do it myself. A pride thing I guess.

Early PFI kits were crush bent.

Turbonetics isn't as horrible as everyone says. We've got one on the Integra and it holds boost levels consistent. I wouldn't use a Deltagate for high boost though. The Racegates are pretty nice.

I've got a Tial on my Maxima though. 38mm, I really don't think there is any need for a 46mm Tial at the boost levels Maximas run. It's so much more expensive.

Greddy uses Tial these days for their wastegates, pretty ironic. I wonder who they switched from with the Type C and R wastegates for the single kits they have.

Anyhow, good luck plurco, if you have any problems shoot us a PM or email or something.

Just wanted to make myself clear that in no way am I saying Turbonetics is better than Tial. Tial is better. But Turbonetics Deltagates do work pretty well for the most part and they're not as junky as people say. But Turbonetics is cheaper, and plurco seems to want to stay on budget.

11.5psi + 55shot . Motor still runs stroung. no fuel tunning just a fmu. 6psi and 35 shot is nothing on a vq. shooting nitrous with boost will help with the detonation. by the way hows the mevi ^_^ . once you shoot nitrous at 4psi boost will spike to 6 or 7 mebbe even higher. mine spikes to around 10 to 12 from 6psi.
