Blose rear speaker/amp question...
I have noticed lately that when I have the volume really low, the sound from the rear speakers is very distorted. When I turn it up, it sounds actually really good.
I have the stock Blose speakers front and back, and a Panasonic Tape player/Changer controller with a 6 disc changer between the rear speakers in the trunk. I don't know how they ran the power to the speakers (this was all in the car when I bought it) but I am thinking, maybe this is the amps failing in the rear? Anyone familiar with this system that can tell me what to look for?
What kind of power do the Blose amps produce, I ask only so I know what kind fo speakers to replace them with. It's a stock 6x9 i the back, correct? The fronts still sound fine so I will probably just replace the rears and see if that fixes it. I am leaning toward the following models:
Infinity Reference 6952i
Cerwin-Vega Stealth SS-2693
Polk EX693a
Cerwin-Vega Stealth (Componet 6.5)SS-2602
Anyone tried a 6x9 free-air and a separate tweeter? If so - did it sound good?
Thanks in advance...

The only thing I know about the Blose system is how to spell it. I know nothing!! I would love to know whatever anyone has to tell me about it, even though I no-longer have the stock head unit.
If that's true about the nothing else working with it, then the Panasonic cheeseball head unit must be plugged directly to the speakers, bypassing the amps. Or even with different speakers, though everything looks stock under there.

Definitely lose the Blose. I replaced mine with a Sony headunit and Infinity Kappas all around (6x9 in back, 5 1/4 components in front). Sounds very nice, and I'm happy with my choice. If you need specifics on the removal of the Blose stuff, just do a search. There's plenty of threads about this.

I don't know how your system is set up but I can tell you what I do know about the bose. The speakers are a .5ohm impedance which means they will only work with the bose amp attached to the speaker. To replace the speaker with a non-bose speaker, you will need an amplifier or run the new speaker off of the radio. The crappy low wolume sound could be the amp or the speaker. You could try switching the back speakers and amps to isolate the problem then replace whatevers bad. The amps and speakers can be found on ebay if you want to go through the trouble. They other guys are right, replacement is probably the best way to go in the long run (if you plan on keeping the car for a while).

I'm just about ready to start replacing the Bose system in my 93 SE (going shopping next paycheck), and I really suggest you just replace the whole thing.
I've heard nothing but horror stories about the Bose stuff once it's more than 7 or 8 years old, it just dies piece by piece and costs a fortune to replace.
You might want to go visit a local car audio shop and see what installation would be, that funky 4 wire thing Bose has going can be a nightmare.

The Blose saga continues...
Here's the weird thing - I just peeked in my trunk and pulled the plastic cap off on of the speakers - it's a Bose driver under there, and the wires to the speaker are coming from the amp next to it. The whole system sounds great - better in fact than the system in my '97 Pathfinder that has the tweeters and stuff. Weird. Wonder how they got that to work.
