Gas door/lever, help!

Ok, the other day, rather stupidly, I washed my car. Now today and yesterday have been freezing! Last night I went to get gas and my gas door wouldn't open, I pulled on the lever and it never "hit" and it seemed to go farther than it ever has before. This morning I finally got the door open, but now it wont close, I can get it shut, but it wont lock in...any help?!

Not sure but:

Is the lever still going further than before? If it is you may have broke the cable.

If not, the latching mechanism may be frozen.. try to thaw it out and try again.

More than likely, it's just frozen. I can't tell you how many times I've done that stupid stuff. One thing to try, is WD-40 or even that stuff you use to unfreeze locks. At least that's what helped for me.
