Headlight and Foglight Bulbs, Advice for an Overzealous Newbie

One of my headlights and the same-side foglight went out, and I need to replace them, of course. My question is, what brand/kind of bulbs are good? I want nice bright lights, without blinding other drivers. I'm sure I saw a thread or something regarding this at some point in my lurking (this is my first post), but I can't for the life of me find it, and I don't have access to the search function. Can someone give me information?

Also, I've owned and neglected this car for a year and a half now, and have only been turned on to cars in general and Maximas in particular in the last few months or so... now I've got the idea in my head to do as much of the work on my car as possible myself. I'm planning on changing the oil and oil filter and the headlight and foglight bulbs this weekend. With my lack of experience in mind, is there anything I should know to avoid killing myself or my Maxima? I've found the how-tos and stuff like that, I'd just like general advice that might not be obvious to a newbie. Thanks!

There's not a lot you can do in regards to brighter headlights and fog lights... without going HID that is. A decent route is to just get a pair of 9004 Sylvania silverstars for the headlights, and some yellow fog lights (h3) such as Narva rally golds. Or just get a pair of h3 silverstars for the fogs, if you want them to match the headlights.

I have a Silver Stars in both set ups. Looks real sweet and with the matching fogs (H3) it puts out a nice bright white light that covers great distance. 9004's are easy to find in Silver Stars but the H3 in Silver Stars are a little more difficult. I got mine on ebay.

If you have lots of rain where you live STAY THE **** AWAY from Silverstars. Unless you get HID get some stocker bulbs at autozone or something.

Silver Stars don't do well in rain? Can you tell me more? I was pretty set on them until I checked back and saw your post...

Thanks for the input, everyone.

I don't get LOTS of rain here, but some... and since the road I do most of my driving on (Highway 17 in Santa Cruz, CA) is a curvy, mountain/forest highway, my headlights having problems in rain wouldn't be a happy thing.

Yeah, pretty much EVERY non-yellowish bulb SUCKS terribly in the rain. If you're gonna spend the $20+ or silverstars, you might as well get some WHITE bulbs on EBAY for half the price and same looks. I had some KOBA bulbs, very white and IDENTICAL to my old silverstars. Sucked in the rain as well but hey, half the price.

We got some heavy rain here in L.A. last week and I think my Silverstars performed quite well. I say go with the Silverstars. You will be pleased.

welcome to the org. i joined not too long ago myself. I got Eurolite xenon SUPER PLASMA 9004 for the headlights and love them. they were only $15. EASY install make sure you wear rubber gloves or they will blow when used if you touch the bulb itself. but i definately need to get matching clearance lights though, because it looks bad next to the stock yellowish one. and the clearance lights will run you about $16 for a pair.

keep posting

If you don't already have a haynes manual I recomend picking one up. That was the first thing I bought for my max and it has served me very well.

Here is a pic of my set-up...they actually look brighter in the pic then they really do, but gives you a good idea.

Headlights: APC SuperPlasma (upgraded wiring harness $15 )
Corner Bulbs: APC SuperPlasma (rewired to be brighter)
Fog Lights: PIAA Extreme Whites (they actually match better)

Hope you didn't wait a year and a half to change the oil, just kidding...maybe not? Ahh highway 17, know it well, if you don't have a radar detector, buy one tomorrow.

What is the maximum wattage bulb we can use in our fogs. I don't want to risk burning anything up.
