Need help on Calibrating Fuel Gauge

I had to work on my speedometer, and in doing so I pulled out the fuel gauge. Now it seems to be out of calibration. Specifically, when the tank if full, the gauge is way over the full line, and when it drains down, the yellow low fuel warning light comes on before the needle hits E. How can I fix this? Should I just wait until it is down to the warning light, and then manually move the needle to the right place? Please help.

fill the tank all the way up and set it at the top line

Here's the mystery. If I set the fuel gauge with the key off, and then turn the key on, it moves up about a quarter tank past the F line, no matter where I set it initially. If I move it manually with the key turned on, it just moves back to the same spot (1/4 tank past the F line). Any other ideas? I ended up just taping a white wire onto the needle that points 1/4 lower, but this is obviously not an elegant solution

have to move it past the the stopper needle (if there is one) you'll feel some tension when you actually start moving the needle without the motor moving.
