Automatic Tranny S/C???

k...well this has probably been discussed before. But I'm thinking of Supercharging my Maxima this summer. The only thing that is holding me back is that I have an automatic tranny. My car has 74k...but some people say not to SC an automatic. What do yall maxima SC experts say....?

Thanks -Ray

Well S/Cing a auto is definately doable. You will want to probably do some basic things like, add a tranny cooler, and do a VB mod. That'll be enough to handle a the basic S/C setup. I know it will work up to a 3.125 pulley, but quite honestly, to probably get the most out of the S/C, or if you want to go with higher boost, I'd definately look into a 5-speed conversion in the future. It's up to you what route you want to go.

I'd love to do a 5 speed conversion! I miss rowing through the gears!

However, at this point I want to concentrate on finishing my home theatre setup. I just need an *ss-kicking subwoofer to complete it.

you'd take a home theater setup over a 5spd conversion?

I guess I'm just lucky. Original auto tranny on my car w/ 101K. Had the SC for 18 months, 3.33 pulley, no problems. No I have the turbo which puts down way more torque, still no problems. Shifts are clean and crisp every time. Stock tranny with Mobiltek VB, custom LSD, and tranny cooler. I just want to see how far the tranny will go. Since autos have absolutely no value used, I might as well push it as far as it will go powerwise and then build up the spare auto I have, or do a 5 spd. swap. No point in ripping it out now while it still works.

Yeah, you guys maybe lucky ones, but it definately is attributed to how you drive and take care of your car ultimately.

Somethings gotta give!

Btw...
Its been 3 years 4 months now since I had the SC installed on my auto SE along with the Mobiltek VB and tranny cooler. The tranny is still fine. I'm at like 94,500 kms on the odo.

You push anything hard enough and it will fail. The VB helps, the tranny cooler helps, but in the end, they are only crutches. After a certain amount of power, clutch bands, gears, TC's, can all fail no matter how fast the auto is shifting and how cool it is running. The only real way to prevent tranny failure is a performance rebuild, ie NRH's where they replace the internals with higher performance pieces.

How much would a rebuild like that cost?

Wow, you can do a 5-speed conversion, with a fidenza and act clutch for way less than that, and still have money left over for other mods!!!

It won't hold quite as much power though. A 5 spd. isn't bulletproof.
