Shutting off when put in reverse or drive!?!

Anybody have an idea of what the problem could be? I drive a 93 auto GXE. My car will start fine. And as soon as I put it in reverse or drive, it shuts off. Sometimes it will drive after 5 minutes..sometimes 15 minutes. Also I live in Orl so its not like 20 below 0 or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Does it shut right off or do the RPM's drop and then it cuts off?

Does it jurk forward or back when putting into gear? Like the tranny just stops the engine? What about Netural? Can u shift through R to N and keep it running? Are the RPM's very low to start with? Dies it idle and rev normaly? Check engine light on? Battery voltage OK? Low batt voltage will turn these cars off! 5 to 15 min is just about right for a weak battery to go dead if it is not being charged......

It can go into Neutral without shutting off. Rpms are fine. And yes it just kinda lurks foward or backward then it cuts off. Also when i said 5 to 15 min..i was saying that is how long it will take for the car to finally move without shutting off. Ill check the vacuum hoses and battery. Thanks for all you help

These symptoms scream MAF sensor to me, exact same symptoms my I30 was experiencing when I bought it. Good luck.

I'm thinking the same thing. I had this issue for over a year where my Max would want to die off while driving and a very rare occasion of dying when shifting to reverse or drive. After running it with the Snap-on scanner on, it turned out to be the MAF failing. I replaced it and everything went well. Then several months later it started happening again but much less often than before. This time the scanner was showing no problems with the MAF, but fiddling with the wiring harness to the MAF changes the behavior of the motor. I'm considering just getting a new harness than looking for a possible break in a wire since a few connectors are broken.

My issue happens to be the IACV and the throttle body need cleaning.

You know I'm starting to consider the same thing. I've been chasing my tail and replacing things here and there but still get the same behavior.

I can see where the MAF sensor and the IACV can cause the engine to starve for air and want to die, but in my case its like the engine is being bogged down by the tourque convertor when put into gear. If I use the throttle and the brake at the same time (carefully) when putting it into gear I can keep it from dying and can sometimes get it to idle at about 400rpm, but it wants to pull me down the road. If I let off of the brake it will go down the road, shift into second and third and do about 15mph with no pressure on the gas pedal. It seems to do a little better at going into gear and ideling at 400 rpm if the AC is on at max but still pulls the car foward too much. when in P or N it idles and revs normal..... Tourque convertor lock up silinoid????

it is either a faulty IACV plunger or bad MAF. You can test it by taking it apart and looking to see if the plunger moves in and out when you turn the ignition to ACC. If it doesnt move at all then it is bad. I am leaning towards MAF though

What you actual idle rpm...and is it smooth and solid or is it erratic?

The car idles fine, Starts out cold at about 1200 RPM then when warm drops to about 900 to 1000take rpm. Again the transmission came from a junk yard and I'm not even sure it works. What are the odds that I got a transmission with the same problem as my original one. Its not my daily driver so I'm not in a big hurry to change the transmission out again, but I'm afraid that's what I'm going to have to do. I will re post if I come up with something new.
