alternator, starter, or battery problem?? help!!! car won't start...
okay so I have a brand new battery and batteries are rarely if ever duds....so in either case, this morning, I start up my car to go to work and it seems like it is trying really hard to start but does get started none the less, the after work, it has a little trouble but not nearly as much....then a few hours later when I want to go out, my car won't start at all....I have full accessory power and lights and everything....but won't crank at all, makes no noise at all, just doesn't start...can't be ignition switch, cause that is new too!!! so to recap, my car started, it just had a lot of trouble starting and now it won't at all, is that the alternator or starter? i have a 95 maxima if that helps anyone....
batterys can be duds, but it is rare
batterys can be flat when installed
Why did you recently replace the battery-was it old or did it die? I guess it raises the possiblity that the alternator isn't working. Did the alternator light come on? Does the start position even make a "rapid clicking" sound or no sound at all? Basically, it could be 1) battery 2) connections 3) switch 4) bad alternator 5) bad starter/starter relay. It's tough to know. I'd suggest getting a jump start. If it starts it makes it more likely a bad/weak battery. Then drive around and see if the alternator light comes on or go to autozone and load test the battery. Make sure the alternator belt is tight. If the car won't start with a Jump start, then I'd be concerned about a bad starter.

umm....so im gonna get a jump and just take it to a shop right from there cause a new battery would prolly mean alternator is gone.....if even after a jump, the car won't start...then its prolly the starter....autozone and kragen will test em for free i hear...just wonderin what your 2 cents is on this problem? wierd too cause I have a new battery and all of a sudden, started perfectly all the time, then one morning, it had trouble starting, then after work that same day, started up just fine, then later that evening, won't start at all...!
I had the same exact problems that you are explaining. It's the starter. It feels like the car starts when it feels like it. If you are really having problems with this starting. You can get a start from the car if you do a rolling start at about 15-20mph. Pop the clutch if you are a 5spd or just start the car at 15 mph. Just enough for the car to catch a roll.
But if i where in your shoes, i would get a new one ($249 OEM).

i am a 5spd...what do you mean pop the clutch....have someone push me with the clutch in, the while gaining speed put the shifter in 1st and pop the clutch out...problem is the lockout...it won't let me put the shifter in 1st...it locks me out of first as a safety function....may 2nd will work....so just pop the clutch out? do i have to turn the key and try to turn the car over while going 10-15mph with the clutch in or something?
Definitely the starter. I had the same problem two weeks ago. Sometimes it would start fine, and other times there would be no crank at all. I had the starter replaced, and it solved the problem. Now unfortunately, sometimes it would start and then die, unless I give it some gas. I think it might be the throttle body, so I'm going to have that cleaned.

I did not think it was the starter though cuz it sounded like it was working.
In the meantime, whiule trying to start it up so many times, I flooded the engine or something, cuz I ruined my spark plugs. I had really low compression.
I swapped out my plugs with the coppers (which are about $10 cheaper a piece).
BTW: THe nissan OEM starter is a rebuilt one, it is not brand new. They charge for a $60 core and you get it back when you bring it back.
Since these are heavy, I just called around local nissan dealers and pleaded for a discount. ONe of them hooked me up. I got the plugs and starter for under $230. You will be paying a lot of shipping ot ship that thing to you and back to them.
My engine actaully had fuel mixed in my oil pan, so I had to get an oil change.
That sucks becsuse I just had changed my oil. Iuse that amsoil exspensive stuff............
well good luck!
hey....why don't u check ur engine codes...last time my car wouldn't start...it was cause of a sensor...i forgot which one but i can find out...also my knock sensor was bad too...so just check the engine codes first b4 u go buy stuff....oh yea...i remember wat sensor it was...it was the cam sensor....as soon as i replaced the cam sensor my car worked better...but i still hav to replace the starter cause the shop was like the engine is throwin that code too....so fuq...oh well...hope that helps
