Aftermarket Y Pipe

So which should come first? A y pipe, or a cold air intake? if you guys think the y pipe, where do i go to get one for a reasonable price? and why did they close my thread about legal track racing against the j30 and 3.5 intrepid? btw, thanks, ill bet those kids high, and steal their money from em like taking candy from a baby

hey echo i got a g-tech too and i used to run 16.0x-15.9x stock on my 99 SE (fully loaded) AUTO CA. then i did a 60K tune-up, and replaced my sh!tty 99 ignition coils, one was real bad and i ran 15.7's constantly with only an intake (which is growl basically maybe 2-3hp)

i recommend you do the same, and start by replacing those bosch +4's with some nissan preferred NGK Platinums or NGK Coppers. and pour in some fuel injector cleaner

i also have swirl valves (only 99 CAli models) in my lower intake manifolds restricting airflow that open fully to let more air in ONLY after 3.2K rpm's which i set to always open only yesterday (cost me $.68 the absolute cheapest mod!)
i noticed the car now pulls as hard at 2.5K rpm's as it did before at 3.5K!

since you don't have the swirl valves you should be getting much better #'s with g-tech (unless your elevation is very diff from that in NY)
since 99 CAli Auto's are the slowest maximas (not for long)

a tuned engine responds better to mods.

Yeah you might wonna know how much a y-pipe costs from budget. I just ordered one today and they said it's going to be $200 shipped.

damn that's expensive...budget went up. I got mine for about $187 shipped.

read read read read and research gets you the best in performance. What people can't understand is researching for parts is the hardest for any gearhead. But putting the part on is the easier than researching.

alright, thanks for the feedback. ive gotten a lot of negative response about the bosch plugs, had i know that, i wouldnt have got them. the guys at autozone said they were the best you could buy, so im like whatever, ill take them. where can i get the ngk platinums from?

Might have gone up due to the exchage rate from cdn to US. but isnt it still cheaper than the other y-pipes? (then again it cost more for me to ship from the US to canada)

my budget y was only 192 shipped to NC at the end of december, so i guess the exchange rate may have gone up a bit.

i see you guys all telling the prices on your y pipe, but i still dont know where to get one from? if you can, fill me in, so i can ditch the cai idea, and pick up one of these. also, my friend said because of the budget y pipe or any aftermarket y pipe, it will give off a code? is this true?

he!! no...where did he get that idea from. He might of got it mixed up with the modified Ecu. But you have a 96 so that wouldn't of even happened in your car.

or actually, eckohb, there is a group deal going on right now that you should get in on. We need some people to get a good price on the Warpspeed y-pipe, a better quality y-pipe. Usually warpspeed is too expensive, but we are probably going to be able to get them for $160 shipped. Also, you have the option for a High Flow Catback for $85....I am not getting one though...they don't do all that much...not even 1hp. Here is the thread...

yeah get in with the warpspeed GD. If we get 21 people we get them for $160. We ju7st need 5 more people. So jump on in and get a good y-pipe for cheap.

I have seen that these pipes aren't street legal (stillen catalog). Is that true? I want one but I am worried about my car passing its emissions test in a couple years (barely passed this time). Since it replaces pre-cats, I assume this affects emissions. I will check the FAQ's about this but if anyone has any info on this please post it. Thanks

I read the FAQ's and have a question. Has anyone installed a y pipe and failed an emissions test because of it? I live in Illinois and don't know if emissions standards are different in other states (besides California). Sorry to bother and thanks for the info.

yeah, i checked out that thread. ill get in that deal once im sure my tax return check is back(supposed to be back feb 6th, but nothing is guaranteed). budget wanted 200 shipped, so this is a steal. btw, has anyone failed emissions because of the y-pipe? i gotta take my car to emissions tomorrow and find out if it passes as is.

I never heard of anybody not passing their emmissions, maybe except CALI people. You just go to preheat your car for like 30 minutes. I already passed my emissions like a week ago and I just ordered my y-pipe so I can't really tell you my story.

I heard what you need to do to pass emissions is just drive around for awhile before you take it in. The car should be all warmed up by then and then you should pass emissions.

Just remember that those pipes in the Warpspeed deal are for aluminized pipes. Budget pipes are stainless steel. Just thought I would make that point.

so basically, if you live in an area with snow it's better to get a stainless steel pipe so it wont corrode? I am in California and in my area I never see snow so an aluminized one should be fine?

Here's what Dallas at Warpspeed says about SS vs aluminum:

"These group buy Y pipes are made of aluminized steel, we warrant they will not rust through for 4 years and if they do we will repair or replace. In more than 5 years no one has ever returned one for corrosion repairs. The life span is a conservative 8-10 years.

Stainless steel does have better thermal resistance than aluminized steel. If you are racing for pink slips or your life perhaps stainless would be the better way to go. It does cost more but it is your life and your money. We also make them in stainless, though we don't have stainless on our Maxima's. We never suggest headerwrap because it shortens the lifespan of stainless and mild steel by 50% because it overheats the steel." -Dallas

noise increase?

I'm thinking of getting a y-pipe because everyone is raving about the great gains in HP.... however, if I were to install a y-pipe, would my car get louder? If it does get louder, would it only be in the mid to high rpms? I like my car quiet at low rpms. Plus, I can install it myself right? Thanks...

and there's plenty of info around the .org about that, I think even in the stickies. I heard the easiest thing to to is go to a shop and have them replace your bolts for like $20, since they're probably rusted, and then you can do the rest yourself. But read the how-to's and only do what you're comfortable with.

Also, Dallas at Warpspeed said that some people complain of noise, but on their personal maximas they have the aluminized steel and it doesn't make them any louder. I heard that new mufflers and intakes make a much bigger difference. Anyone else have experience with this? I've also heard that if you wrap the pipe with exhaust wrap it is quieter, but the dealers do NOT recommend that because it's hard on the metal of the pipe's themselves and usually voids warrenties. All of Warpspeed's pipes have a lined flex section, which apparently eliminates most/all of the "bees in a can" sound that more cheaply-made flex sections make. If you go back a few weeks and read the Ypipe threads I'm sure this has been discussed in detail.

It will make it some louder. There is nothing that adds diameter and increased airflow along with 20hp that will not make your car louder.
