2 questions for 5sp owners

Hi, im just about to start my 5 speed swap, almost have all the parts needed, but i got 2 questions. first, are there 2 different ECUs between standard and automatic? if so i guess i'll need a new ecu. second, which flywheel is the best? i've seen some wieghing at a mere 5lbs, and i think i remember reading somewhere that if the flywheel is too light, then you end up launching worse then stock. and also, i've seen people with the Fidanza flywheel. How did you get that?(ok so maybe not just 2 questions lol) i went to their site and they do have an application for Maxima.

yes ecus will be different with transmissions, with my small experience in it, the auto ecu will work with manual but you get auto tranny codes cause its no longer there. but a manual ecu will not work with auto.

Hi. I did this swap about 8 months ago. The ecu between the 5spd and auto are different, but both ecu's will work.. The auto will give you a check engine warning dued to the conversion. However the performance will not be degraded from the auto ecu.

I also have a fidenza flywheel and I have no complaints. Rule of thumb, you don't want your flywheel to light it will affect performance. 5lb fly is not recommended. The Fidenza is about 12lbs vs the 25lb stock unit.. One thing I've notice with the LW Flywheel... Your acceleration is very responsive, and your de-acceleration is also responsive.

At the time, I purchased the Fidenza for about $325. Not sure what is worth now? There are many places that have fidenza for maximas for example

Hope this helps.

I was wondering the same question about flywheels about a month ago so i decided to do some research...

Nissan makes their flywheel semi heavy for a reason it makes the engine very smooth and enables it to retain energy at part throttle cruise and up long grades for better fuel economy. Now if you replaced the stocker with a fidanza or comparable flywheel it'll let the engine rev up very quickly and allows the engine to work easier due to the reduced weight spinning around on the back of the crank. BUT...

as soon as you let off the gas the engine RPM drops instantly and the car slows down. If you go too light this will cause cause surging and bucking at cruise speeds and poor driveability and clutch engagement. Also, inorder to move you will have to start a much higher RPM just to get enough inertia to get your car moving..

hope some of that helps..

Before I installed my clutch/flywheel setup I researched it and found the sam results stating too light of a flywheel would cause horrible launches. Everything I heard about Fidenza flywheels was good. It being light, but not too light.
I was set on purchasing a Fidenza. Then I came across a REALLY good deal on a Stillen flywheel, so I went with it. It is lighter then the Fidenza, wieghing around 7lbs.
I can honestly tell you that I've had no issues with it at all. My launches seem to be the same as before. I get no surging or bucking at cruise speeds.
I did also install a Exedy stage 1, so that sucker grabs really quick. Maybe thats why I havent noticed any delayed launches.
I did notice that with the lighter flywheel the RPM's do drop quicker...but the car accelerates so much quicker now.

I got a Fidanza flywheel....my car is very hard to drive cuz the throttle is so responsive that it causes surges, and lauching is very hard....and they suck in traffic.

stock...the rpms drop way too quickly so when i granny shift, sometimes its rough and driving in the city it gets frustrating trying to smooth out the roughness and trying to rev match when the RPMs rise and drop so quickly. Been driving 5-speed for 3 years, and I'm having trouble....I even stall once in a while

I think the unorthodox makes a 5lbs, and a 7lbs.

once again thanks for all the help. wish me luck with the swap.

When I researched flywheels I found many saying that the Unorthadox and Stillen are actually manufactured from the same Co. but are distrubuted and stamped by Stillen and Unorthadox.

SkyMaxGTR, if you want I can give you a ride and you can see how the car drives with it installed.

Ask Jeff92se if he has any available.
