Hit and run....police won't do anything (Long)!

Well I was going to work almost two weeks ago and I saw that my whole drivers side was scratched and both doors were dented. I also noticed that the truck who is assigned the spot next to me had a scratch on his bumper. I called the police and started investigating. His bumper had four rubber ridges going all around it. There were four rubber scuff marks all the way down the side of my car that matched his bumper perfectly. I pulled out my digital calipers and found they were exactly the same marks down to a few thousandths of an inch. His bumper is also exactly the same hieght off the ground as the scratches on my car. There were also tracks matching his tires going right into my car!
The police officer thought that it was the guy but said he had to give it to a hit and run detective. Well its been almost two weeks and the detective keeps saying he hasn't been able to get to the case and that if I don't have a witness he will probably not pin it on the guy even though I have all of this evidence. I am starting to get fed up with this. What should I do?

He denies it and my insurance agent said if I report it my rates will go up, even though its not my fault. Even if they recover money from the guy who hit me the fact that an accident was reported will raise my rates. I hate insurance companies!

that's pretty stupid.

When my neighbor hit my car and didn't tell me, i called the insurance company and asked for their advice. They told me to call the cops immediately. So i did... i told the person on the fone that I had a good idea of who hit my car and i'd like someone to come out and take a look.

2 squad cars pulled up within 15 min and they immediately went to my neighbors car. I didn't tell them what side he hit me or anything... and the damage on his car was MINIMAL, just 3 rubs at the corner of his bumper. He took out his baton, did a rough height check and matched it on my door... he said it it looked like they did it and towed their car away.

I'm surprised even with all the evidence you have presented, they didn't help you. good luck

I'm glad they got the guy that hit your car. I hope this they get this guy because my deductible is $500. I also don't want my insurance to go up. I will post pics on monday.

Maybe I should go on Judge Judy.

hell yeah, I wanna do that! LOL well they do pay you to go, to get there, and to stay overnight and you get a limo all around the city. Sounds like a good deal!

I would **** up the guys car if you dont get any $ out of him, just do it at his house or out somewhere.

Some lady ran into my buick, we decided not to call the cops. She had no damage, my bumper was scraped and my corner light popped out. She said that she would just pay to get it fixed. I got her information and I sent her a letter the next day. I was basicly trying to get some free $ because i just popped my corner light back in and buffed out the scrape. I sent her an estimate for over $350 to get it fixed, but I told her I knew someone that would do it for $200. I like free $$$. Anyway I got sent a prefessional letter back, SHE IS A LAWYER! basicly she told me that she wasn't going to pay. I was so ****ed. I'm going to get her back tho.... In time......

You can sue him. I'd take him to small claims court and present all of your evidence, along with an estimate to repair the damages. Sure, he won't be charged criminally, but you may get your car fixed...on him.

If the evidence is as compelling as you say, it should be a piece of cake to convince a judge that it was him.

yet another reason why there are so many uninsured drivers on the roads these days, that sucks man, i would go to the guy again with all of ur evidence and kick his *** with it! Have you tried going to a lawyer (even though he/she may be worse than the insurance compies, hehehe )

hit and runs don't make insurence go higher, my car has been hit 4 times and my price is the same.

yea some insurance companies are evil though, i never had a problem, but my girlfriend had. She had erie and her civic was hit at work by a company truck, the company (also had erie) turned it in with pictures, but erie still refused to pay her, and told her she can claim it as a hit and run, with increased rates. My insurance, State Farm, will ask no questions and do it.... all depends on the company. Talk to your insurance, and if they want to raise rates, take it to your better business bureau, they get shi t done. And dont forget to put sugar in his gastank and break his back window and key it to helll.

I gotta agree with oblongshapes and tyrexx in that if you are absolutely sure and you've exhausted all legal avenues and especially if the guy is being an a** about it, do something about it yourself. Just wait a month or two or the guy will put two and two together and know it was you...

call his insurance company. If something like that happens, they are responsible for paying it, not your company, therefore your rates don't go up.

Or, take him to small claims court, and settle it that way. You should have at least gotten pics or a statement from the officer stating how similiar everything looked, and that there were tire tracks to prove everything.

A couple thoughts about this thread, first of all, that's not too competent on the PD's part. Tell the detective you want some action, if he gives you that too busy prolly wont amount to anything anyway BS, ask to speak to his superior. I'd like to know where you live that cops aren't there to do the "protect and to serve" thing. When I had a similar situation in an apartment complex, the Five-O told me if you see any car in the complex that looks like they were involved, notify us immediately and we'll send a car over.

There was another comment that hit-and-run does not cause rates to go up, that he made 4 claims. I would say consider yourself lucky, because you have a guardian angel watching out for you. Hit-and-run is a major fraudulent type of claim when only 1 car is involved in an incident which involves damages.

Insurance is a rip-off in all flavors. Even beyond autos, people have their homes destroyed by floods and insurance loves to say they weren't carrying the prohibitively expensive flood insurance, too bad. Not like the tv ads at all.

If you think that dude did it based on your evidence, don't let him or the PD off the hook because you have a legitimate beef. Hit and run is a crime, not a joke. Good luck.

Thanks for all of your replies. I am going to wait and see what the detective tells me on wednesday. If he doesn't charge the guy I will talk to his superior(already have his number) and hopefully that will help. If all else fails I will try the local small claims. My boss says he knows a detective who is pretty high up in the ranks. He said he was going to have him check into why the other detective is taking so long.
I don't plan on doing anything to the other guys car. He lives in the next building to me anyway. Karma will get him .
I just bought a new rear door from a local junk yard and may try fixing the front door myself (took autobody in high school). Does anyone know if the 95 black was different from the 98 black? I haven't picked it up yet.

Frank Fontaine, I am in Salt LAke City, UT. Not too happy with the PD here.

tell the guy who hit you to repair it or he's gonna see his truck on fire

Yea police cant do ****, the person who hit me and took off pretty much admited to it, and the police said it was out of their hands, cause its their words against mine, so they said it'd have to goto court or insurance. Luckly he agreed to pay for the dmgs. When it comes to hit and runs, cops cant do much.

If there is a murder and no witnesses, does that mean no one can get convicted for the crime? Is all of the other evidence thrown out if there aren't any witnesses? A crime is a crime and they should all be handled the same way. If there is enough evidence to prove his car hit me but there weren't any witnesses it shouldn't matter. But the police require a witness for hit and run crimes and it isn't right.

man back in my country that guy would get fu{ked up big time for that. If he wouldn't give the money, next day he would be hanging by his ***** from the tree. Sucks man but it's a big damage and I would defently take it to court.
