Center crossmember removal

Quick question, Is it safe to un-bolt the center crossmember with the engine not being supported?

I had some work done on my car today and the mechanic said he had to drop the center crossmember to do the work. From what he told me he did not have the engine supported by anything and said it only dropped about an inch down. I always assumed that your supposed to support the engine with a small jack and a block of wood under the oil pan to keep the motor from moving whenever the center crossmember is removed. Hopefully this did not cause any damage to the engine or tranny. Any thoughts?

You got the cross member back in fine? I always thought the support was to keep the engine in position to put it back in. I will be doing Home Depot style mounts shortly and would also like to know this. I would guess its okay.

not supporting the engine could be bad...I wouldn't advise you to do so.
