help me interpret my dyno...

1996 SE 5-spd

ok so power-wise, i have hybrid intake setup and Greddy catback.

I've got 160k + miles on the car and the last time i did maintenance (spark plugs, fuel filter, blah blah blah) was when the car was at 90k miles. I wanted to do a maintenance before the dyno but I didn't get a chance...

so the first 2 runs were done in 3rd gear... then I told them that they were supposed to do it in 4th gear but my numbers suck because the car was really hot. All 4 runs were done with just a minute or two in between... so i wasn't too happy with those numbers at the end.

Are these okay numbers?? I think I averaged pretty well compared to the other cars that were there. I took the dyno in hopes to find any maintenance problems since I had hit 160k miles last month... I dunno how to interpret dyno charts so I was hoping maybe you guys can give me some ideas.

Also, how much power increase do you guys think I will get if I get a y-pipe?

oh yeah, a tip to all... DONT DYNO ON BALD TIRES!! on my 4th run, one of my tires was starting to come apart! rubber flying off of it... lol so yeah, dont even try it!

thanks for any help.

VeeTec's STOCK Dyno #'s :

160.3 fwhp and 181.3 fwtq

Yours seems a off for your modifications, maybe a bad Knock Sensor, or o2's?

I need to dyno also.

Yeah those numbers are about 10hp lower than I would expect from a car with your mods in proper working order. It's possible your high mileage engine is getting tired.

hmm

so on a 4th gen 5-spd, you dyno in 4th gear right? They dynoed it in 3rd gear. wouldn't the numbers be higher in 4th?

no. the difference in the gears is like 2hp. I have dynod 3rd and 4th back to back. The idea is to be as close to 1:1 gear ratio as possible.

dude your tire was coming apart

That extra bit of drag from the tire disintegrating could have lowered your numbers to the point that they did. If your KS was blown it'd be a lot lower (happyricefob's dyno ). Get some tires on it.

uhh, your HP looks just a little low, but shouldn't your TQ be like 20 higher? what would account for only a torque loss?

My O2 sensor must be 70k+ old because according to the dealership papers of it's last tune-up (dont at 90k... car has 160k now), I do not see any O2 replacement.

I'm supposed to have 20lb of torque ?? Damn, where is it goin!

now that i think about and look closer, its probably more like a loss of 15 TQ. still funny that you're missing so much TQ and not as much HP.

(nadir i hope you don't mind me posting this)

IMO this is the major factor that affect nadir's dyno. it is kinda hard to transfer all his potential horses to wheel under this kind of condition...

I don't think that the tire tread has much to do with it, as long as it doesn't spin on the dyno drums (ie slippage due to lack of traction).

As for dynoing in 3rd or 4th... that too doesn't matter (at least on a Dynojet). The drums are able to calculate the ratios (I forget the techical explanation now) between the wheel speed and engine RPM that it reads. I have dynoed in 3rd, 4th and 5th and have identical numbers in all gears. IF there is a huge variance then there is a problem.

Nadir, your HP numbers are about 10 too low and torque numbers are about 20-25 too low. Get a tune-up done and then go back to dyno and I bet you will recover most of that lost power... I can almost guarantee it. The remainder could be due to a bad sensor or the life of the engine (although I seriously do not believe that this is a factor...)
