139.4 WHP, 155.5 WTQ 1995 Auto Maxima GXE w/ ghost 0304 knock sensor...

139.4 WHP, 155.5 WTQ

Modifications:
- BOMz Racing Hybrid Intake
- Jim Wolf Technology Air Filter
- Warpspeed Performance Y-pipe
- Magnaflow Muffler Street Series #14829
- Design Engineering Inc. Exhaust Wrap
- HKS Blue Hyper Grounding System
- GXE Speed Limiter Removal
- Mobil 1 SuperSyn Synthetic Oil 5W/30
- Nissan OEM 15208-9E000 Oil Filter
- NGK BKR5E-11 1-Step Colder Spark Plugs

Major Problem:
- Malfunction Knock Sensor, ghost 0304 CEL code.

Analysis:
I probably lost 15-20WHP due to malfunction knock sensor. Everytime the throttle is opened 30% or more, the ECU retards the ignition timing and change into safe mode, which killed the performance and gas mileage.

I will go back next month with a working knock sensor, Motorstorm Underdrive Pulley and see.

I'd say you lost a helluvalot more than that. You should dyno about 175-180 with those mods.

i thought the stock heat range for the 4th gens was the same as the 5th gens set at 5. if you are running the plugs listed at the top, then you should be in the correct stock heat range.

Man I think a stock VG would put a hurtin on you right now. Something is majorly wrong and I believe its more than just a knock sensor. Also the part number you listed for the plugs is stock heat range...BKR6E-11 is 1-Step Colder Spark Plugs, and BKR7E-11 are 2-Step Colder Spark Plugs.

What gear did you dyno in? I believe you should be doing it in 2nd.

The other thing is that if you are using cold plugs, you are going to lose a lot of power. I've seen what cold plugs can do to a NA car.

i am pretty sure the dyno for the auto should be done in 3rd. its the closest 1:1 ratio and you can lock in 3rd by going to 65 with o/d off and punching it. it should be high enough not to downshift to 2nd.

Dana, 3rd gear is the closest 1:1 ratio in the Automatic 4 speed. I usually go WOT around 3800-3900 rpms in 3rd to avoid downshifting into 2nd. And about his plugs the part number listed is stock heat range (5), 6 is one step colder and 7 is two step colder.

If you thought the KS was the problem, why didn't you just put a resistor in line to bypass the knock sensor. That way you would know for sure if that was the problem or not and the exact difference between bad KS and good working KS.

cuz it didn't work

anyway i have a new KS now. gas mileage went up significantly and i can feel the VQ can pull harder. i'm pretty sure i have at least 150HP at the wheels.

So what exactly could someone expect to lose using 1-step colder plugs N/A?

funny, when i tell people here that they dont believe me..

i think the KS was definitely most of your problem. a car with a bad ks or a bypassed ks that somehow still isnt doing what its supposed to (grrrr) will run like **** and be harassed constantly by dodge dynastys. one time on a really hot day i took my dynasty and the 4th gen with the bad ks out and back to back the dynasty ran 17.0 (worst ever) and the maxima ran 17.6 (holy crap)

thats how much bad KS sucks.
