So I want to get my window tint redone because I want to go darker. Right now I have a metalized 45% film. I called my local tint place, the same place I had my current tint put on at 3 years ago, and they said that they could tint over the existing tint to make it darker. He said that was the easiest way to do it and it would look fine as long as my existing tint was in perfect condition, which it is. This still seems kinda ghetto to me tho putting tint over tint. Any of you heard of this?

it doesnt look bad at all, as long as ur previous tint is in good shape. I know a few friends who did that, and it looks fine.

 

how much are they going to charge you to remove the existing tint? I am in the same boat, except my tint has gone bad...

how ever, there was lifetime warranty on it but the previous owner had bought it. I gotta find out if the warranty carries over to another owner.

 

they didnt tell me how much it would cost to pull the old stuff off beause they said there wasnt any need if the existing tint was in perfect condition. They could jsut tint over it and it would be fine.

My friend did it, 2 coats of five percent......

it looked ok, but he did it himself

 

It will look ok if they do a good job and use the same shade, which I would ossume they would do and do it right since they proposed the idea and they probably have done this numerous times.

It is definitely cheaper than having to remove your old tint and re-tinting everything again..

Are you trying to get a different tint color instead of metallic like you have on right now or that you want to get darker? I think it would be better to have the old tint remove and put a new one, if you think about it that the old one, let say it's already five years, and if you had a tint over that tint, they would look funny. Wouldn't you think so?

 

This is less labor intensive to tint over the old tint. It's better to take off and put new tint on since old tint probably faded even a little in three years. Taking off old tint is the big pain for the place to do.

 

See I think it would be better to remove the old tint and just retint too but the shop stands by the fact that just retinting would be the thing to do. I told him that i had the metalized sutff and he said that they couldnt put metalized on top of metalized because its reflective but they could put just a regular charcoal tint under it to darken it but it would still have the somewhat reflective look of the metalized.
