Place Racing CAI Reviews

Hi Max Guys,

I have a 2K I30 and am interested in installing a Place Racing CAI. I wanted to come here to get some opinions on this CAI.

I like the mean sound of a CAI, but not all the time. Does the PR CAI sound loud under normal load? Say if i bring the engine up to 3500 or so RPMs in first?

Also, what are the performance gains with this mod? Power throughout the rev range, throttle response, etc.

Any info is greatly appreciated

Oh, I also plan on exhaust mods aswell. Probably Cattman Y-Pipe back

ok .. in my opinion you should keep your I30 stock and drop it and put some chrome on it....

but the PR CAI is a good upgrade...7-9 hp..

but i just cant see a I30 sported out.... its too classy
you should stick to cosmetics
just my .02

Sorry, I dont really like chrome, But a drop is in the near future. I couldent call my self an enthusiast if I just kept it cosmetic. That is why Im going with the eibach Pro kit and Tokico Illuminas for my drop. I like the looks, but the preformance, to me, is more important.

I agree that a loud intake on an I30 would be kind of out of place. That is why I am asking about the noise level. I dont want the noise when just driving around town, but I wouldent mind it when I go to blow the doors off some unsuspecting ricer.

Any other input on the sound level of the intake? At what point does it start to get loud?

Place racing is the ONLY true CAI for our cars. I just installed mine like 3 weeks ago, it sounds loud if you floor it, but if you drive normally, you will only hear a nice growl between 2-3k wile your pressing it at 50-75%. It sounds crazy at wot/past 4.5k.

It's a fairly simple install, I did it myself in 5 hours.... yea I’m slow...

Make sure that you drill a hole with at least a 3 1/4 hole saw, you’ll need some space for the rubber seal. If you will have time, paint/rustproof the cut, I didn't do that yet, but thinking about going back to fix it.

question about the PR...

Where does the air filter sit? Is it exposed to dirt/etc from the wheel well, or does it sit someplace else? Anyone have some pics of the filter location?

I've had my PR for 12,000+ miles and absolutely love it. As far as noise, well I had my greddy cat-back installed prior to the PR so I really can't say how loud it was with stock exhaust set-up.However I do know it sounds great with the greddy. The filter sits in the fender well away from dirt but it will still get dusty. I just changed mine at 12,000 miles even thought they recommend 15,000 for filter change, and it was slightly dusty. I'm using the monster flow. All the bull---- about the monster flow filter breaking apart and getting sucked up, is probably by those running a filter for 50,000 miles. So there you have it, if you don't mind cutting a hole in your fender well, get the PR CAI.

Thanks Guys,

Im always amaized by how many Maxaholics there are in this forum. That is why I asked here instead of the I30/35 section.

Make sure that you drill a hole with at least a 3 1/4 hole saw, you’ll need some space for the rubber seal. If you will have time, paint/rustproof the cut, I didn't do that yet, but thinking about going back to fix it.
So it does come with a seal to go around the hole?

Also, I realize there are always trade-offs, but I dont like the idea of loosing low-end power in order to gain some top-end. In yalls experience is there a decrease in power at low RPMs?

Thanks again for the help

I had mine for 3000 miles. Blew a MAF. Sold it. Missed it. Bought another. My first one came with the Monster flow filter. I had no problems with that filter. I did however notice water on the top of the filter during removal. The second one came with the K&N. It doesn't have spots where water can sit. It also fits in between the fender and plastic wheel well gaurd. It rain a lot here in FL and my worries about the intake sucking up water never happened. I was, of coarse, very careful during rain and navigating puddles. I did not find the noise under normal driving conditions intrusive. At WOT it was very crisp, a great sound. I currently have a fast living room. PR CAI, Catt. Y, and Catt. muffler. I can't wait to stop being lazy. Good luck with the intake, I think you will like it.

I will take pics and will find a host, unless someone else has some to show.

Errrm... OK, whatever

So, No one out there with a certified butt dyno? Well if nobody has any oppinions about the low end power loss then I just have one more question.

I know custommaxima used to carry the PR CAI, but I dont see it any more. Does anyone know where I can find one for a good price, or does CM still stock them?

Oh and can you specify what kind of filter you want? I want the K&N.

thanks again

I have a PR CAI sitting in my trunk waiting to be installed but i noticed that the picture on the cattman website and my intake are different. The cattman pipe has two smaller pipes branching off of the mid pipe and mine only has one?!?! Is that right? or is one for the fourth gen and ones for the fifth? do I have the right intake? Also i'm nervous on cutting a hole in the fender! any recomendations?

Don't be nervous. I know several people that have done this without problem. I have heard an argument on decreased structural integrity, however, we arent talking about F1 tolerances. I have not noticed any difference in handeling. Be sure to put some rubber between the pipe that fits into the fender and the hole as it will rub. Also I suggest putting a little silicon on the metal. When removing mine I noticed a small bit of rust. And finnally, if you ever needed or wanted to remove this intake, the battery covers the hole very well.

You wont get much of a butt dyno with the addition of 5-10 hp. Its just not noticable. Dynos and track times do show the gains tho. With CAI, you wont lose low end, you should gain some torque. Its with the pop-chargers that you lose some low end. My low end is perfectly strong with my CAI setup. Top end is stronger too, proven by the track times

It looks like the Cattman is plastic while the PR is SS or aluminum or something. It just looks like the PR is quality to me -and I think it looks better-. My reasoning can be wierd sometimes, dont worry about it.

So nobody knows where I can pick up the PR?

try emailing place racing directly (info@placeracing.com). Their website (http://www.placeracing.com) must be getting a makeover, there's no info on there anymore. BTW, Cattman sells the PR CAI as well as their own. click on intakes and scroll about half way down the list, you'll see the PR CAI listed there

Yeah... Right. It took them three or four MONTHS to get me a 2 page catalog, and I never even heard from them. I just ordered three times and finally one showed up in the mail. I can only imagine how long it would take to ship a CAI.

Why does CM not have the PR CAI listed anymore?
