What % should I tint my windows? And is $175 a good price for all windows? Ca

I was wondering if anyone had any input on what percentage I should I tint my windows on my 96 Maxima SE, its got a pearl white exterior, ( the white white one) and dark charcoal interior. I want to do all the windows except of course the windshield. I am in the Bay area Ca, I was going to go 20% in the back and rear pass sides, and 15% on the driver and passenger front windows. I got a quote for $175 for this job. Is this a good deal? The tint is by solar guard and the place has been in business since 1988. Anybody have any thoughts?

I had all my windows tinted for $200, BUT with a life-time warranty - meaning should anything scrape off or any damage whatsoever is covered under the warranty. I just bring the car back and pay nothing for a new tint 100% guaranteed.

Also, I personally think it looks best when you tint all windows with the same % tint - I did. Although driver and passenger tints are not legal at all in Illinois, I don't get in much trouble. BTW, I did all mine with 15%. Looks kinda stupid when sides don't match up or when sides match but rear window is darker IMO.

I paid $200 for all windows also .. . a lil pricey, but the guy does a good job (tints to the edge of the window) and has a lifetime warranty. I got 20% all around and 5% back window. . . not pitch black, but dark enough to notice.

The guy has a lifetime warranty too. I was going to go lighter in the front because of the legality issue too, but I didin't know if 15% was enough all around with keeping out heat.

15% is darker than 20%. but anyway, $175 is a good price if its good work with a warranty. i'm paying $200 for 5% on the back half and sunroof, 20% for front windows, 35% on the windshield.

Just make sure you get the same tint all around. If you go lighter on the front driver/passenger windows, it actually messes up the effectiveness of tint, which is supposed to keep your car cool and for privacy.

I guess privacy would be the number 1 reason people get tint. A tint at 30% all around will be way more effective than a 20% in the back and light on the front. If you go lighter on the front, those windows will let in drastically more light inside the car that will reflect and light up the interior and it will show through the darker rear glass. What i did was just go limo all around and when you see a cop, lower the window a little to let some light in and the interior becomes more and more visible through the tint with all that incoming light.

Just do it the same all around, otherwise itll look gay.

BTW i paid $90 for my tint with a 5-year warranty. I figure i wont have my car 5 years from now. Ill have my M3. Piece.

I'm tinting in the next week or two and was quoted at $150 with a lifetime warranty. They use 20% or 35% and Global brand tint. Anyone ever heard of global?

I too recommend going the same % on the front and rear sides.

Here's a link to tint laws.

edit: just got another quote for $175 including sunroof using Llumar with lifetime warranty, made an apt for next week.

20% holla.

I got mine done 2 years ago for 130 w/lifetime guarantee. Legal here is 30% in PA i believe, but it depends whether or not the cops in your county give two poops.

this is rediculous. how would a car with 30% all around be darker than a car with 30% in the front and 20% in the back (substitute any numbers). this is common sense. also it gives the illusion that your front windows are lighter than they really are. that might not matter in your state, but it does in tx. and i'm not just talking theory here, i've ridden everything from glass house to 5% on the windshield, and all kinds of combos. how it looks is opinion (i agree solid looks better) and everything else is propoganda.

What i meant was that if your goal is to have an even 20% transmitted light "environment" in your car, having the windows tinted evenly at 20% all around is gonna be more effective or efficient in maintaining that environment than if you go a little lighter in the front to comply with the fuzz. if youre going for a 20% environment, going lighter in the front will let more light into the interior and show more through the back windows.

hope this clears it up a little

holla back

I got them done on friday, man its dark! I will probably be pulled over in the near future! In the future I will go 20 in back, 30 for the rear windows, and 50 for the driver and passenger! Does anyone know in the bay area what a ticket for tint entails, do you just go and sign it off, and is there a monitary fine also?

My dad got pulled over a while back for having like 50% tint and the cop made him actually take off the tint in front of him. the cop let him go but my dad was ****ed.

i think its just a fix-it ticket in cali but i could be mistaken. go to a chp office and theyll sign it off and then you pay like $12 or something at the courthouse.

Some tint places will have you sign something like a waiver if you want to go darker than is legally allowed, just so they dont get in trouble. Alot of places will redo your tint if you have to take it off for the cops, at a lower price, or even for free. you should call the place you got tint at and ask them if they would hook that up for you if you get pulled over.

Piece.
