Tach being weird

Hi everyone,
I have a slight problem with my auto 96. When I accelerate, I can feel the car
start to lag a little bit in power, and I look down and see the RPMs not increase for a quick split-second. Then it accelerates for another second or two and then it does it again. It's probably not noticable to other passengers, but I do notice it.
Also, when I reverse and brake, the RPMs jump down to about 200-300 and it feels like it's about to stall, but then it jumps back up when I put it in drive. Then, while I'm driving, when I brake, the RPMs once again drops low and then just goes back up randomly.
It started happening after I installed my y-pipe and a new altenator.
I installed my y-pipe a few months ago and right after I installed the pipe, my alternator was shot. So I replaced that and ever since, my car has been doing this.

Does anyone have any clue on what it may be?

Thanks!
THD

What is a clutch convertor?

Clean your TB, and check your computer for codes - see if you have 0304 (knock sensor). If you're running low octane gas that feeling may be the timing being retarded byt he ECU. If you don't already, try 93 for a couple of tanks.

I got codes for the knock sensor. Is that an expensive repair?
