Ever thought of how much money you've wasted on parts you dont even use anymore?

Since I'm so short on money right now, I have been doing a bunch of thinking about parts I've purchased for my car that I don't even like/use anymore, and the money that I wasted on them.

ECU which was supposed to be a 96 G-Force ECU but ended up being a 98 stock ECU: $300

300ZX aluminum calipers: $374

300ZX rotors and the cost to machine them down 3mm: $80

Slotted stock rotors when I could have just used cheapo stock ones: $160

Hawk HP+ pads for 300zx calipers: $84

Brushed Aluminum dash kit (my first "mod"): $200

Harlan RPM switch: $50

Hood locks for my CF hood that don't work because you cant use them on a slanted hood: $35

All the car stereo stuff I ever purchased between the time I was 16 and about 21, with the exception of my head unit which I still use: God knows, probably $1000

What I wouldn't give to have that money back now since I am trying to put this turbo kit together.

I was wondering, with the 300ZX brake swap, did you not use any of the parts or did you do the swap and not like the results?

I never ended up using any of the parts I bought. I ended up changing my mind halfway through it and used stock calipers and mustang cobra rotors.

Long time no talk Neal. I wasted so much money on my car it's not even funny. But when that stuff comes in it's fun. The UPS and FedEx trucks put a smile on my face. What kind of turbo are you trying to get?

I've just come to the conclusion that I have to budget to really get what I need for my car. I have never really gone all out with this car because of other priorities (house , kids, wife) but I'm going to stick to putting $30 a week to get things one by one.

i try to plan ahead and buy accordingly... i havent had too much to waste..

i have the caliper paint, the good type... 60 bucks...

and i have a set of projectors from a audi I may retro into my housing.... 200 bucks....

see it as an investment.... don't count the items as lost money until you sell it and account for the difference in prices.... you may even make a profit... lol

Because as I said earlier in the thread, I changed my mind on what I was going to do with my brakes and used stock calipers and cobra rotors.

BTW none of this stuff has been sold so its truely wasted money for me (the 300zx calipers sold last night actually, but I still lost about $350 on the calipers/pads).

OK...so it was a change in motive versus a "installed/hated/removed" type decision.

Answer: Unfortuanately...yup. Also wasted alot of time/money buying and installing a mod then wanting another one, uninstalling it, and buying/installing the new one.

I've swapped my FSTB, springs, shocks/struts, rims, etc... a few times...

On the 98 I have not wasted any money, yet. I learned from the 96: seats, RVM pulley, AE pedals, 89 GXE rims, a RSTB, ground wires, chrome door handles, lowering springs, man the list goes on. They cool part is most of the crap I once bought can still be used or sold. Though that pulley will never be used.

I'm glad the only thing I can say I've wasted money on is a handfull of super white bulbs. I have some minor regrets, but they are all still on my car and functioning.

At last count, I've got nearly $35,000 invested in this 10 year old car with 205k miles.. yeah, I'm well aware of pi$$ing away money.

4 sets of wheels on the back porch, 5 sets of brake rotors... 2 sets of calipers... full turbo setup sitting on a shelf, including a $1000 manifold that I'll never use because I can only fit a T3 on it... 8 sets of brake pads that I didn't like, at $50-60 a set.... 2 sets of seats that I stuck in there and didn't like....
$1000 in stereo stuff I've never installed... two amps bolted in that aren't even hooked up because of the other stuff I've never installed....

Yeah, I could go on all day about wasted money.

Did it happen to be a silver Z with rims, cause I often see a real flamboyant guy driving around in pink shirts? IIRC, the license plate started with a V and ended with a Z.

I've benn modifying cars for 10 years now. I started before I even had a license and my own car. The number one lesson that I've learned is......

NEVER BUY TWICE.

When you upgarde, make sure that you know what your goals are. The part you are buying should be in line with what you are building. Make sure that you won't outgrow your current mod.
