To turbo or not to turbo?

Help me out fellow org members. I'm kind of at a delimna in trying to decide between staying N/A or going turbo. Now, if I stay N/A, the mods I want are Hotshot headers, JWT lightned-flywheel, Warpspeed or Cattman b-pipe, and a Technosquare ecu flash. But, if I go turbo then I want to get the stage 2 kit from SSR Engineering. If I decide to go turbo, I'm going to have to wait until the car is paid off and that won't be for another 2 years. Also, one concern I've got with going turbo is that once I do, the car will be virtually undrivable because of all the torque steer it'll create. Or am I crazy for saying that? Anyway, would you wait for 2 years and then go turbo or just stay N/A and be able to mod the car now.

Do I remember correctly, wasn't you who wanted to go back to stock and said that you regret all your mods?
If you really want the turbo and you can afford it, I'd say go for it. Be the 1st turbo 3.5 max!

If you have the money then do it. But the thing is no one has a 5.5gen turbo yet so no one knows how reliable it is and the all the works, Check around the altima forums and how the kit is doing on their 3.5's.

Yeah, that was me, I must have been sick that day, because the thought of going back to stock never entered my mind again. Anyway, I've kept modding my car ever since thenand I don't plan on stopping.

Just for the record, org member pimpjuice already has a turbo 2002 Maxima.

I'm having the same dilemna. The turbo sounds very tempting but we are talking 10k for us auto' to make it right, which include a bullet proof tranny build up. Then we still have to add in tuning costs, some gauges, a 3" exhaust, and I'm sure a few other things I don't even know about yet. Of course I still need some wider tires, tint, and some better shocks.

So should I just go for the ECU, tint, tires, and shocks and be done with the Max and start saving for my 2006 Cobra Mustang? Or shoud I go all out on the Max?

its also about your preferences. Its not just about going super fast in the 1/4 mile. I plan to do some road racing in the near future and a NA car IMO suites that type of driving much better. Especially with all that power a turbo can kick in halfway through a turn accelerating out

but eventually it might get to a point where you feel that you got every single bolt on and its still not enough, then you only have three options:
1. sell the car, buy a faster one
2. go FI
3. keep the car but buy another faster car

i think turbo'ing a maxima is kind of a waste of money. the amount you'd be spending, you could trade it in and get a car thats purely performance oriented in the first place. you could probably get a slightly used 'vette and break even.

1BadMax,
Get the mods you wont be forced to remove when you get the turbo. Honestly, I couldnt wait two years to add a turbo - I would have another car by then.

03BlkSETE,
Are you on the Corral? (www.corral.net) I'm GandyCobra. You should wait and probably go for the 06 Cobra if funds allow, assuming you like the new body style, you should be VERY happy with what Ford is going to put out.

I'd say no. The max already has more torque/power than it can handle at the front tires. Torque steer is awful and I lite the tires up if the clutch is dropped at all. Not uncommon for a tire to just break loose on dry pavement when I pass 4500 rpms in first gear. And forget accelerating out of a turn. I can't fathom how bad it would be with the incredible increase from a turbo.

The max is a blast to drive, but I wish it were a RWD vehicle(with an LSD obviously) or had AWD.

this post should really be 'to keep the turbo or not'... just get it and worry about the maintenance\driveability stuff later!

ahhh, wusses. =P

either boost the **** out of it or build it up.

If you're going to build it N/A keep in mind there are all sorts of options available now
internals
http://store.yahoo.com/sgpracing-sto...ctronics4.html

cams
http://store.yahoo.com/southwestauto.../nisenima.html

add hotshot headers, and a TS ECU.. maybe bigger injectors and 11.5:1 compression pistons and rods you'll be pushing like 320 to the crank easy.

I wouldn't recommend turbo if you're worried about long term reliability. Owning a modified turbocharged car is like getting a second full time job. traction isn't really so much of an issue unless u can't drive.

Turbo it man... SSR's kit's look super high quality... and NA is never gonna be even close to as fast as you can make your car if you turbo it.

I think the 2nd. Someone else built a custom kit I believe. But get the turbo.

I think I've browsed that forum. I'll definitely check it out more thoroughly. I really miss having a RWD American V8.

To keep this post on topic, as someone mentioned a 3rd option might be more viable for me and other. That would be a supercharger.

I would first wait until the warranty is over before turboing the car. Also buying the turbo kit is one thing, doing it the right way is another one. ( ask the expert like Big Dog, he'll tell you a word or two about this ) I would think that if the kit cost 5000$ then there is another 5000$ + to put on top of that for the car to handle that kind of power. I would not imagine myself driving a turbo maxima with 350 HP on stock brakes, suspension, rubber etc... Better be safe than sorry.

My 2 cents

Personally I'd admire someone who spent a ton of money building up their engine N/A...and not just bolt-ons, but internals too.

Most people go for the bling, so they go FI or Nitrous...but for those who like to be understated and a little more sleeper...

all I gotta say on this subject is:

YALL ARE NUTS!!!

turboing or s/c'ing and new or damn near new car is crazy..kiss ur warranty and reliability goodbye...

I dont get why you'd wanna pay $10k when all is said and done and then have nothing to show for it besides a really fast and unreliable car that if it broke down, all repairs would be outta pocket

call me crazy but IMO do the turbo ONCE the warranty is gone

this guy is crazy, OBVIOUSLY WE DONT GIVE A FLYING F**K ABOUT THE WARRANTY DUHHHHHHH. besides its a nissan maxima, these cars dont break and the engine IF you do happen to blow it up is cheap at the bone yard because of the fact that they just dont blow up man. boost the snot out of that thing. man up on the steering wheel instead of driving like a girl get some stickie tires and enjoy the replacment for displacment TURBO TURBO TURBO

Thanx for bringin a thread alive from the past.

Most people never experienced a 500+WHP FWD car, and why is it that you can put a turbo on a Civic and not on a Maxima ? Why ? Can please someone explain it to me ? Is it cause a Maxima is a family car ? Civic is a friggn econobox, not some kinda performance car. People have the right to modify whatever they want, minivans ( old turbo Chryslers), family rides etc. Maxima drivetrain is alot stronger than 99% of the FWD cars on the market anyways, VQ engines are boost friendly and I personally applaud people who take the initative to turbocharge their cars.

If you dont like it, STFU and don't post.

i never looked at it that way. if civics can boost, why cant maxima's. They were not built to handle more power. As long as its done right, there shall b no major problems. I say go boost as well. You are at your limit with bolt ons anyway.

the problem was the turbo sitting on the bottom of the car bolted onto the transmission...

The power thing is fine, i'm all for that. I think they are going to be boosting 6th gens soon (so i've heard).

Why would you bolt the turbo to the bottom of the car???? remove the air box, after the down pipe you re-route it up the front to the snail and then down the back to your cat. and you put your k&n on the end of the turbo inlet right where the stock air box would be. no try and tell me there is no room over there. i know when i took my air box assembly off for the cai i was like holy **** i would fit a 4 cylinder over here. HAHAHAHAHAHA Go boost dude. i have a fully built honda running 35psi of boost and over 600hp to the front wheels and i dive it on the street for fun and my maxi is my daily. just make sure you have a 5 speed/6speed maxi a good clutch and you would want the se tranny so you have the limited slip diff. good luck dude
