2nd driveshaft failure in 6 months, any ideas why?

Hello guys, heres the run down. I have a 2002 6spd with 40K miles, about 1.5 years ago my transmission was replaced under waranty. About a month later the front right wheel bearing went. Shortly after that the FL bearing also went. I had both of the bearings replaced by a local mechanic. After I had both bearings replaced and the steering wheel still had a vibration in it (AKA the curse). Before I knew it the car adopted a vibration under acceleration, the problem quickly grew in intensity until the car was barely drivable. I personal replaced the FR drive shaft. This seemed to cure the problem and the car was back to only having a minor vibration. Now about 5-6 months later the front right drive shaft is shot again(the curse lives on). The vibration is getting worse and worse every day.

Now I honestly would like to blow this car up or drive it into a lake but I my morals will not allow such actions... What I would like to know is "WHY"? Why did/is my car blowing bearing and driveshafts? I have progress lowering springs in the front, H&R's in the back. I also have adjustable AGX shocks. Spring - Fall I use 18X8 SSR Intergrals, in the winter I use the stock 17 inch SE wheels/tires.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

tha MTG cards have put a curse on your car. Sounds like you and Steve(DMB) are having the same vibration issues that he couldn't figure out before selling his car. I've riden/driven his car and it almost felt like riding on a bent rim. Hope you get it figured out man.

The problem is that you're using driveshafts! FWDs have half-shafts...
Just f'ing with you buddy, I haven't a clue but I wish you the best of luck in figuring it out!!

It could be caused by incorrectly balanced tires. My Accord had the incorrect weights attached to the rim.

Thanks Goodyear!!!!

Interesting, I have a set of new tires ready to go on once I get this drive shaft replaced. Hopefully it fix's the problem

Blu, the MTG cards are paying for the repairs

1/2 shafts, drive shafts, CV joints, there all the same

Perhaps the Frankenmods have turned the car into a franken car. You think the modded engine mounts might be to blame? I don't think they could be though, interested how we are just about the people only with them.

definitley sounds like wheel balancing . one time i brought these rims
second hand and my car felt like it was falling apart . mechanic told me
bearings one told me ball joints. replaced them both and still there.
then i went to a high speed balance shop he balanced the tires and
it rode like new one of your weights might have fallen off.

Could there be a shim problem with the differential unit inside the tranny that's causing such wear?

Perhaps wheel balancing is causing my drive shafts to fail, however the vibration I suffer is not from just un-balanced wheels. I have two differnet sets of rims/tires and the car drives the same with them both.

Spirilis, I know nothing about about your theory, perhaps this is the problem? All of these problems started right after my transmission was replaced under waranty. Infact the same thing happened to Steve who also suffered these problems, hmm... Any idea's as to how I can figure out if ths is the problem? If this is indeed the problem how would I go about having it repaired?

Anyone want to buy a nicely modified 2002 Max for $11,000? I am serious....

whoa, 11k? wish i had 11k to drop on a car.
you're in RI, why dont i see you around? i think i've seen you in warwick (RT2) a few times, stillen kit and some kind of exhaust, right? that was several months ago, beginning of last summer IIRC.

my best advice is take it back to the dealer, tell them the situation and talk them into either fixing it or telling you positively what is wrong with it. which dealer did you have the tranny replaced at? i know a guy at smithfield nissan, i might be able to get you an answer without the usual "well its modified from stock so thats the problem" runaround..let me know if i can help you out.

It looks like a local freind of mine (and org member) is actually going to buy the car for $13K. I will miss it... I live out in the boonies of R.I., out in Western Coventry. I do drive on rt 2 about twice a week though, my max is silver, with a body kit + a lot of tastefully done mods.

My motor was replaced with out the waranty, so I definatly have no waranty now. Infact my speedo is off about 20K to

One morning the exhaust starting pooring out smoke. I took it to my mechanic he said either a piston ot piston ring went on it. I was able to find a motor with 7K miles on it localy for $1000. They even delivered it for no charge. My mechanic installed it for $600.

My Jetta would eat axles every 6 months. The guys at the shop told me it had to be the motor mounts. That could be the culprit for vibration too. I replaced the $120 fluid filled motor mount and it fixed the problem for a little while, but the motor mount went bad again. I don't know if 5th generation maximas use fluid filled motor mounts but it wouldn't hurt to take a look at it.
