Safe to run spares in back?

Thats my question. Is it safe to run two spares as skinnies in the back? I know that they are only rated for 55MPH but still. I think that rating is if you use them on the drive wheels. In the back they won't spin and therefore won't heat up at all. If they're at 40PSI and its only a 15second blast they can't get too hot can they. I vaguely remember a thread a while ago about someone who ran slightly smaller/lighter rears but didn't get any gain. If I remember correctly the tire was still very large like a 205 or 200. The spare reduces contact patch drag drastically and weight slightly so it would make sense that it would make you faster. How much? I'm going to the track Saturday and am aiming for a 14.7. Keep in mind I'm auto. I'm bringing my compressor and everything so driving to the track on the spares aren't an issue. For those of you that have raced and more specifically, those that have raced at GLD; do they have power in the pit area?

I don't think you'd see any gains. Do you see any other FWD cars running donuts on the back?

You're probably asking for more trouble than it's worth.

There isn't a track in the country that will let you do it.

They will spot them like a nitrous bottle mounted on the hood.

Non speed rated tires are not allowed.

The rims yes, and a good idea.

I am working on something for the rear even better and will post after I try them this weekend.

PS Do I think its safe? Yes. However I don't make the rules and anywhere I have run they are very specific on the space saver spare tire.

Given the fact that you are using SSR comps I would just leave those on the back. I don't think you will see any gain whatsoever using those wheels in the back. It's far more trouble than it's worth, not to mention the tracks wont let you use them.

BTW reaction time has nothing to do with your 1/4 mile time.

Like Neal says I wouldn't get too carried away worrying about the rear. I30tMiked did an experiment last year comparing heavy rears and light rears and saw absolutely no improvement in times. I am not totally convinced they don't help and will compare myself this weekend when at the track, so I will report back. My stock wheels are 51 lbs and my millenia wheels with light tires weigh 29 lbs so I will try both and see what happens.

That should be a good test. It's just about the same weight difference betweeen the wheels that I used only your changing wheel diameter as well, which I did not do.

Jime, your stock wheels weigh how much? Is that on your '02? I'm assuming so.

You guys think I should run with the stock GLE's or the SSR's? The GLE's are slightly heavier but using the rudamentary formula inertia is lower than the SSR's but I will be losing 3cm of tread. You thoughts are appreciated.

Yes, stock 17's on an 02 weigh 51 lbs.

Just finished calculating what I have removed from the 02 so far and I am within 45 lbs of my 95 GXE when it was race ready and I haven't considered the catback which is lighter or the rear seat, so with a few more small things and I should get to my goal of 3000 with me in it.
