I may have done a dumbarse, Exhaust Note Louder.
Ok, i have a y-pipe with a universal straight thru 2.5" muffler with twin tips. It was a harmonic and beautiful WOT sound that wasn't overly loud from within another vehicle, but had a deep idle growl.
Today, after my crappy universal muffler was falling off, i replaced it with another, but single 4" tip muffler, then i got this REALLY REALLY crazy idea.
If you look behind the cat converter...there's a resonator (i call it the pre-muffler)...it's basically a 18" long straight through muffler. I had that replaced with a straight pipe. Now... it's pretty loud.
I'm not sure if it's a good mod...I'm still questioning it and i will probably buy another universal muffler and have it weld inline where the old resonator was to help quiet the exhaust note. I'm just kinda regretting doing it...
Vent over.

sounds like the stock resonator...i had mine removed awhile ago (when you don't have an aftermarket muffler it sounds pretty good)...if its too loud for you...umm, weld it back on (that might back up exhaust flow though, 2 welds might be thick)
well, first day with the new exhaust on the freeway and i must say, it sounds pretty at WOT at around 80mph echoing off the freeway barriers (if you live or been in vegas, you know what i mean).
I'm gonna have have a muffler welded in the stock resonator's place...it's just too loud for a street car... and a family sedan.

Well I don't have a Y-pipe, so I can't comment on that. But I do have a 2.5" mandrel-bent catback exhaust system with a straight-through muffler and no resonator. It drones in the cabin at 2000 to 2500 rpm. But at normal freeway speeds . . . around 3000 rpm . . . it's relatively unnoticeable.
I guess it's just a matter of taste.

This is what I have. Cattman Y (w/ a custom flex section becuause the oem one sucked ***** and was the source of most of the noise), custom flanged RT cat, custom cat back and Y2k muffler. This system is probably the quietest exhaust there is for this level of exhaust work. They key here is a quality flex section and the 2000 muffler. Oh and I don't run a resonator.
And if you want the ovoid chrom tip for your muffler, you can buy just the tip from Courtesy(like $30) and just slide it one. That's exactly what I did.

I'm gonna get the stock muffler welded back on... it doesn't have the nice tip that the GLE and SE has, but, it HAS to sound better than it does now...
