Optima Batteries: Where to buy and what size?
Optima Batteries: Where to buy and what size?
Hello all,
I am looking to get a red/yellow top Optima Battery for my 1997 Maxima. I am wondering if you guys know which size/type I should buy?
I also heard that the Optimas for our car is kinda "short" so that we need to put something between the battery tray and the battery so that we could secure it..... do they happen to have another type/size with the same foot print but taller (so there's no need to raise the battery up)?
Thanks for your help!

First of all if you have an aftermarket stereo system then I would say get the Yellow top. If you don't have an aftermarket stereo system then I would say go with the yellow top just incase you plan on changing the stereo. The difference between the yellow & red is the yellow top is a marine battery & can recover quicker when the current draw is at high demand. Optima's do not come in any other sizes. instead of putting a spacer underneath the battery you can always put a slight bend in the rod that is at the back of the battery tray. Thats how I did it & my battery doesn't move around at all...
u can buy it at www.custommaxima.com
I went to Autozone and what they have is Duralast batteries... I went to a local Battery Plus and they have numerous sizes in the store. However, they don't have a Maxima listed so that's why if you know the correct size for our cars...
BTW, I don't have aftermarket stereo system in my car, just plain stock. I read in several threads that yellow top do not last as long as the red ones for starting battery...?

My yellow top optima comes with a 5yr. warrenty. Free replacement, and if you mean different sizes as in CCA (cold cranking amp's) then just get one that has atleast 800CCA's & you'll be better off then any duralast battery on the market? Check your local pep boy's for one!!!
well i do know that not all autozones carry the optimas so try another one. i acn't imagine why they weren't made for under the hood, they are car batteries. check their site. search google. the have a parts lookup. but basically the optimas are all the same size they just tell u if it will fit and what to get to make them fit.
Thank you.....34/78 eh?
Here is the list for red top:
http://www.tna-sports.com/index.cfm?...6584&pageid=29
....you could also see the types for yellow and blue ones as well.
Seems that 34/78 is the best one. Now let me get my ruler and go to the garage to see what's the height of my battery.

i bought a red cuz i had everything red under the hood, now that i got a system, i got only 150rms going to a cerwin vega sub and 120rms to other speakers off the amp + the 2 fronts on the pioneer reciver, when i go up to 3/4 volume the bass dims my fogs, and everything else except for my 02 max HID. What would happen if i had a regular battery? My amp draws 42 amps and plus the 10 from the pioneer reciever. i didnt want yellow and red under my hood. should i just get a capacitor? my total RMS is 315W. I listen to music with deep constant bass ( old skool reggae)
Tyrexx,
Do you have to have something on the bottom of the battery to raise the height a little bit? I see the battery in the picture using the stock tie-down and that's what I am gonna do (unless you tell me where/how the SWA tie down looks like).
Where did you buy it from and how much $$?
Thanks!

i got mine from cosco wholesale club, and i forgot the price it was cheaper than pep boys, i think it was 115 with the old battery swap. It came with a red plastic on the bottom that you can remove or leave it on, that gives it a little more height for installations such as our car, so i didnt add nothing, just bought and install, i didnt even need to extend battery cables, just like installing any other replacement battery. Looks really hot too.
alright, i got a stereo system with about 1000 watts and right now i have a wal mart battery in there. from what i hear yellow top is better for people with systems but then somsone said that yellowtops arent made for under the hood or something. which one will be better for me? red or yellow?

Guy at autozone said the yellow top couldn't stand the heat, and is used primarily as a battery for your system (usually thrown in the trunk). I didnt think he was lying since the yellow top is more expensive. Oh well, Red top is my favorite.
Try Costco for Optima if you have a membership. They have the redtops for $99 while I paid BatteriesPlus $129 here in IL.
I just pulled my Redtop 34/78 out last week and swapped in a lowered Genesis G13EP instead. Pardon my dirt.

I don't have Costco membership...I don't think they have Costco here in WI. What happened to your red top, BEJAY1?
Batteries Plus is giving me the same price here as well...but they don't have the 34/78 in stock.

ALSO I got my red top from batteries plus here in Madison, WI
It was about $110 with the extra post screws, and I got to keep my old battery.
I got a discount because my buddie works there.
I got yellow top Optima in my max.I bought it at Autozone.I also bought a new battrey tie down rods with a much a longer theard, so the battery bracket goes down much further.A yellow top battery should be safe to use.Check out the faq.http://www.optimabatteries.com/faq.asp
