Shifter Question: Maybe I need to replace ?

Hey, got a shifter/heat shield question:

A couple of week ago I went out to the dragway and when we were about to leave I noticed that when moving my shifter around in neutral it was hitting metal. You could hear a metal like clang or knock.

Went to nissan service department and had them look at it. The mechanic told me the shifter was hitting the heat shield. He said he beat the heat shield out of the way.

I got in the car and took off down the road. Problem Gone !

Last night I went to the dragway, it had been at least a week since the guy fixed the problem. Anyways after my second pass. The shifter was doing it again. Im sure its from the hard shifts. Last night in neutral you could move it up in third gear and clang clang ! The first time you would have to move it to the far right and clang clang ! Sounded like metal.

Ok at this point im thinking i need a new plan. I talk to a few people at the track. One person suggested new bushings, and then i got to thinking new shifter.

has anyone been down this road before ? Should I just go ahead and buy a new shifter ? And what can I do about bushings ? does anyone make aftermarket bushings that are good or should i replace with stock ?

Thanks
-ceasar

I don't have any suggestions on bushings but a Short shifter, man would do you good. When you have pressures like this it's necessary to change a part to aftermarket.

a short shifter would be even closer to the heat shield.

hmmm, well what is causing this problem ? im thinking something must be worn out allowing it to give or bend unless the heat shield is loose ?

I think the problem is the shifter it self and not the heat shield. Probably the plastic ball thing on the shifter is lose and it moves down when you shift. YOu will have to buy a new stock shifter or a new short shifter to fix that.

oh btw. If the heat shield was lose, it would probably rattle with the cat, and wouldn't be close to the shifter.
Good luck

Take yourself under the car and remove the heatshield yourself like BigD suggests. I, for the life of me, can not figure why people take their car to these idiots at the dealership. They know how to crossreference part changing with fault codes. Anything beyond that is out of their realm of comprehension. Either your pivot ball is moving, or your support rod is bent. The second happened to me. And do NOT go and buy another support rod from Nissan, either weld it yourself for free or have someone else do it. God bless and good luck.

dan

Oh also check and make sure einstein didn't create more of a problem when "pounding" the heat sheild. FIX IT RIGHT or leave it alone!!

Sometimes, I wonder why that heatshield is even there?
