Just curious if anyone has gotten the Rattle On Cold Start TSB performed on their 2K2+ Maxima and, if so, what the results were? I am nearly off warranty and want to get this if necessary but I'm not sure how much of an issue this problem really is? I do experience the VTC rattle noise on cold starts. Thanks in advance!

 

Mine does this everyday now. For the first two years, it only happened once or twice and only when really cold.

I've been told no damage will occur but this noise is getting really annoying. I don't have much confidence in my local Nissan dealer to get it fixed. I would also like to hear from anyone who has had it fixed.

 

My 2k2 is at the dealership again today to have them test it out for this problem. They claim to have performed the fix about a month ago but they must have done the wrong VTC sprocket because it still happens almost every day at least once (sometimes when I leave work too). I have had my car in six times now for them to fix this problem and the hesitation and only two of those trips could they reproduce the noise or do anything about it. Of course last time I took it in I told the guy to park it on an INclince...so he parks it nose down - on a DEcline and of course they couldn't reproduce it. This time I insisted that they give me a decent loaner car and told them to keep it for a week and just get it done.

From my experience it's just difficult to get the dealership to reproduce the problem but I'm not giving up. To me any rattle from the engine compartment should be fixed - especially if it's paid out of Nissan's pocket.

 

I didn't know there was a TSB for this rattle??

 

it is happening to me. the parts are in backorder so I am not sure when it will be fixed.
take it in and have it done before your warranty expires.

 

I read the procedure on this today:

1)Drain oil
2)Drain radiator
3)Remove cover, coils, plugs fuel rails, upper intake, lower intake, belts, lines, hoses, etc.

As much as I hate the noise, I don't have the confidence that Nissan will get all this put back together correctly.

 

Same here... The noise annoys the heck out of me but as long as it doesn't break anything, I'll just live with it. What really bothers me is how smooth by buddy's G35 is at start-up... I guess the next time I'll pay the extra 5-6Gs for the Infiniti.

 

Same here. Give me car you don't have to remove the upper intake manifold to change the plugs.

If the G35 Coupe goes AWD, I'm there.

this happens periodically on my 2k3 too.

 

Car is at the dealership today and technician is recommending to me that I don't touch it. The sound doesn't last long and I was told that it is not worth pulling apart the engine for the possibility of slightly reducing the noise.

 

My wife's car did this too. I took it to the dealership and they reset the ECU, it stopped for a while, but it is back now. I had the recall for the crank sensor done and it is still there, but not all the time. I am not going to worry about it though, if I did, every little rattle and creak would drive me crazy. I will just wait until it gets worse or better yet, breaks, then I will know for sure what it is. It's too hard to have a dealership guess what it is, especially since they have to do it for free under warranty.

 

Yeah butfrom what i'm starting to learn from this site is that are problems with are cars are consistent from car to car. (rattles,wind noise ect.) The dealer works on a lot of maxes, If you ask me they know what the problem is but either realize that its a lot of work to fix or they just choose not to fix it.

Man. I need this to be done soon. It's so annoying.

 

I can live with the noise; my car is running perfect and I am not about to let the dealer screw that up.

Funny, I think this was the dealer's attitude as well!

 

It will take the morons about a day to fix it, yet it probably pays them like 6 hours to do. So this is why they don't wanna do it. I know how it is... used to be a Nissan Mechanic, and did VTC sprockets on the older VE30DE motor in the 3rd gen. It wasnt much fun to do. My VQ30DE-K motor seems to be quiet on start up, no engine rattles or anything. I got 80K smiles on mine too.

 

One dealership in the area basically stated that it is normal. I didn't bring up the TSB. Has anyone with a 2k3 had the TSB applied?
