Sorry if this has been covered before but I've browsed and browsed and haven't found the answer.

Anyway after cleaning my throttle body the other day my cold start idle has gone from ~1200 rpm (pre cleaning) to 1450 rpm! Before, during cold starts as soon as I shifted into "D" the revs dropped back down to 650 or so but now they remain @ 1000 or slightly greater when in gear.

Driving while the engine is cold is now a pain as the car will accelerate on its own (slightly) and stopping requires greater force due to the cold idle of about 1000rpms in gear. When the engine gets warm the revs become approximately normal and in "D" are about 650 or so. Before when warm and in gear they would be closer to 600 and in neutral 700. Now when warm in neutral it is about 750 rpms.

I've tried removing some of the slack in the throttle linkage and made sure the cable was all the way out etc. but still cannot fix this problem. Also why is there two throttle cables...one next to the main?

The car is a 96 GXE with 191,200+ miles so maybe it is the TPS though all was well before the cleaning! Thanks in advance for your help...

theres a little bolt and screw next to where your cables connect to the throttle body..thats how u adjust your idle...the other cable is for cruise control...

 

Everything is how it should be. Your engine runs at a higher RPM when cold to warm a little qucker. DO NOT adjust your idle. Once the vehicle was warmed to a safe opperating temperature, your RPM's will drop down to around 750-825. You shouldn't drive the vehicle until the RPM's have dropped.

You know i have the same problem, and i figured im screwed untill my TB is dirty again hehe! No, seriously i have the same issue, but i didnt want to ajust the idle b/c if i adjust it, will it not rev too low when the engine is warm? (since problem problem occurs only when the engine is cold) am i right or wrong?

basicly, if we adjust the idle so its normal when the engine is cold... when the engine is finally warm (in 3-5min) wont the idle be too low?

I cleaned my TB about 2 weeks ago. Before, engine would rev to about 1500 (cool March weather) and settle down to 600 or so. After engine revs to about 2 grand and settles to 1500 briefly, then it idles at 900 or so when warm. I did adjust the IAC screw a bunch while the engine was running and didn't really notice a difference, but it's possible I adjusted the idle higher. It's also possible that the clean TB and IAC (which I also cleaned) lets more air through thus increasing idle.

I'd like to get the idle down to 700 or so. Does anyone know how many turns of the screw you have to do to see a difference? I turned at least 1.5 turns in each direction with no audible difference in RPMs.

 

Why not adjust it after it's warm? I think my idle went up after cleaning the TB too but haven't gotten to adjusting it yet.
Haynes Idles:
1995->manual: 550-650
->auto:600-700
1996 on->manual:525-625
->auto: 600-700

 

Well according to (_8*(l)Homer this is normal! and btw Terran, what im trying to say here is then the engine is warm, idling is normal... why adjust?

 

Same thing here, it seems normal, well, I hope ! After cleaning the TB, idle when cold is at 1500rpm and when warm it sits around 750. Also, before, when coasting and releasing the gas pedal and stepping on the clucth, the rpm would drop to 650 and stay there. Now if I do the same thing, they drop to around 1100rpm and then when I'm at a complete stop, it goes to 750.. hope its normal too !!

Just leave it - it will come back to normal after few weeks - messing with idle screw which is pre-set from factory and should not be adjusted might create whole bunch of problems .

on the other note - i like how the car creeps in D when its cold .
