Paying balance when picking up plates for a new car.

Just something that was annoying to me. I bought a new car. When I went in to pick up plates, the dealer said there was a balance of $13 from the DMV (Division of Motor Vehicles). I was surprised.

Any of you pay a fee when picking up plates? I thought everything is taken care of at signing of papers.

were they standard-issue generic plates? as long as they weren't some kind of specialty plates (VA has over 200 different ones!) or vanity plates, there shouldn't have been any other charges. i didn't pay nothing extra when i picked up my (standard VA) plates from the dealer.

anybody else?

Should be free.......in NJ there are a few you do pay for but those are special order plates.

Sounds like your dealer miscalculated and wants you to pay for their goofup. I can't believe they would nickel and dime like that for $13 considering the total amount of this transaction. I would refuse to pay just to see what they would do.

That's EXACTLY what I think happened too. Well, this was the third time they kept me waiting and brought "surprises". I was fed up so I just paid it since it was not really the issue of money ($13 is no big deal) but the principle. As for the principle, I told them up front, "I WILL NOTE THIS ON THE QUESTIONNAIRE I WILL BE RECEIVING FROM THE MANUFACTURER."

They shouted, "Can we talk about this?"

I said, "I've had enough. Thank you." And walked out. I showed more than enough patience I think.
