I have a simple question. Should I get the hids or the lights off the 02-03 or are they the same thing. I would like to know if they fit exactley and if I can do it myself. Please I would like to get a clear answer too. Thanks!

I would get the entire headlight assembly from 02-03. You need wiring harness and mounting clips to install on your 2k.

OK here are some quick reviews of the lights...

They are almost a direct fit for 2k/2k1 they are plug and play.

The angel eyes need to be custom wired. But high low and corners just plug into existing harnesses.

I love how they look, the angel eyes are sweet. The only weird thing is the low beam. The beam pattern is something to get used too.

Bottom line is they are great replacements to your stock lamps cosmetically but no where near as nice as real hids. They are a great deal at a least half the cost of the 2k2 lights.

Some others are tring to swap the projector out with an HID one. I might try and do this later on but the projector used was pretty high priced for me so it isn't gonna happen soon!

Good luck
check out my home page for pics!

I thought that people were trying to put in Bi-Xenons which are more focused then just HIDs. I think these lights look sweet and should not be to hard to upgrade to Bi-xenons later on down the road

I wonder how the beam pattern would be if you were to just install HIDs into the projector.. I'm thinking there would be some glare... Obviously the light would be better out of a projector specifically made for a d2s capsule ... something like a Valeo projector would be very nice in there.

Basically there really isn't a need to go with a bi-xenon projector swap. Personally, I'd prefer a halogen high beam, that way it can be wired to an alarm, and you can flash to signal without worrying about damaging your HIDs.

why wont the aftermarket HID fit into the projector if the bulbs still remains H4?

Because the bulb mount is the same, but the location of the 'filament' (since there isn't one in an HID bulb) always lines up incoorectly with the reflector which causes the beam pattern to be 'incorrect' i.e. all over the place.
Some HID retrofit kits have shortened or lengthened bulbs to correspond with different reflector designs, however its unknow which goes to which, and unless someone wants to buy each type and see which produces the most accurate beam....

My reccomendation is get a housing that looks like it already has real projector even though it doesn't. Then get real projectors from a junk yard and retrofit them. Aiming is a pain, but this is the best way to go.
Besides the beam pattern in a 5-series or X5 or A4 or mercedes is better than the one that comes with the D2R in the '02-'03's anyway. Of course it will only be for low beam, but if you're adventurous you can do bi-xenon, but the cost isn't worth it because the distance isn't that much more. It just raises the low slightly. Better to get proper driving lamps or high beams.
I know this both from reading and study, and more importantly because my other car has them.

Seth

Here's is the X5/5-series beam pattern:
