All HotShot Header owners please reply

I have been running the Hotshot headers on my 2002 for about a month now. Two weeks ago, I had the CEL come on and read a code P0158, Bank 1, second O2 sensor. I ran all the diagnostics and cleared the code. The car ran fine for about a week. Now I have the CEL on again and have the code P0158 and P0138. So now I have a problem with both secondary sensors.

I lengthened the sensors and installed them in the B-pipe directly behind the Main Cat right above the crossmember for protection.

Is anyone having CEL problems and what is your set up relating to the O2 sensor position?

I noticed the O2 sensor wire is steel and the wire supplied to lengthen is copper. Is the original wire length critical, as is, is it resistive? Also, could lengthening the wire causing too much loss for the circuit being that it operates between less than .4mV - 1 mV? Should I replace the wire supplied by Hotshot with say 18 gauge to minimize loss?

Did I place the secondary sensors too close to the main Cat? They are heated sensors so I figured it didn't matter and I would have the protection of the crossmember.

I look forward to your input.

I'd like to know the answer to that as well. I keep getting "bank 2 sensor 2 slow response" codes on mine. I have my 02 sensors lengthened and applied in the same spot as you do. I was thinking of replacing the two behind the cat with new ones.

I just installed an o2 simulator because I don't have a cat but it works fine, no codes after a month.

I haven't gotten a CEL light yet. My o2 sensors are in a similiar position to where they were in the stock configuration. I think juice has them in the same spot. Hopefully he has pics.

03BlkSETE - You've had yours installed longer than I have and I can't believe you haven't had a CEL yet. There must be a problem extending the wires.

Jime - What 02 simulator are you using and how does it work, hook up?

I haven't heard from Hotshot yet. I did hear from Steve at Southwest Auto. The only thing he suggested was that the 02 sensor not be closer than 3 inches from the Main Cat, but didn't know why it wouldn't work if closer.

Thanks for the posts. Let's stay on top of this. I'll reply as soon as I hear from Hotshot.

I don't think juice has thrown a CEL either with the same set up. Hopefully he'll see this thread or I'll call him later.

.
I am using this one.

http://www.o2simulator.com

Very simple to hook up just power, ground and signal. Make sure you get the one with 2 outputs ($25+5 shipping).

You have to keep the stock o2 sensors connected because the ecu will detect the heater is not there and CEL. I have mine hidden under the front valve cover. Its about a 15 min job.

I've had mine on now for two(2) full months about 3800 miles, No CEL(knock on wood). The two 02 sensors were replaced after the cat, onto the B-pipe, Hot Shot provided me with two thread bullets(welded on the B-pipe). Like I said No CEL yet. BTW: I had mine installed same place as BlkSETE.

03SheerMax - I'm a little confused. You say yours are welded into the B-pipe, yet say they are in the same place as 03BlkSETE. He said his are welded in stock location, not extended. Also, how did you extend you wires? Use the wire supplied or something different and crimp connect or solder with Shrink-tubing? Also, how far back from the CAT did you install the bungs in the B-pipe? I installed the bungs right behind the CAT, above the crossmember in line with each other.

Tombguard - Where do you have your 02 sensors installed? B-pipe or stock location in header? If in B-pipe, how far back from Main CAT and what type wire, connection did you use?

I think 03SheerMax means that our headers were installed at the same shop, Maximum Tuning.

Yeah, we welded the two thread bullets or Bungs onto the B-pipe, I don't remember exactly how far back from the cat. And as far as the wiring, we used the wiring HOT SHOT provided. As far 03BlkSETE, I remember him being the first one to get them done, so Jeff from Maximum Tuning wasn't sure where to relocate those two 02 sensors(instructions didn't specify). I think it was a couple of days after when we figured out to relocate them after the cat onto the B-pipe.

I got a code sayn catalitic converter efficiency below threshold :P But then again I don't have a single cat on the car. It takes my car 5 days to set a check engine light. I am waiting for my 02 sensor eliminator kit to come in and I will be set On some cars U can fool the ECU thinking into having 02 sensor heaters installed, by just runing a jumper in the harness between 02 heater wires. I've done this on my Audi S4s when I ran no cats. I'm gonna try to eliminate the rear 02s all togheter... they fail its 80 bux down the drain for each 02 sensor. In IL they test for OBDII codes durring emission testing on 96 and up cars. If U have no codes they dont do a sniffter test even ! Just make sure all the readiness codes are set when U go in, and your car can stink like crazy and they will still pass ya.

I relocated my O2 sensors into the b-pipe with the wiring that Hotshot provided. They are opposite each other about 4 inches behind the cat. I have had no cel or problems. It's strange that you are having the problems with the cel.

I heard back from Hotshot. They said to double check the wire connections and if wires were crossed. I decided to go ahead and replace the wire and connections again. This time I used 18 gauge/4 conductor stranded and shielded and I filled the crimp connectors with dielectric grease. I did this last night. No codes coming to work today. Hotshot also questioned putting the O2 sensors right behind the Main CAT even though they said they never heard of that being a problem with other vehicles. If I still get codes, I will move the O2 sensors farther back from the Main CAT or buy the O2 simulator.
