Difficult to say...could be a number of different things. Go to Autozone and have them pull the ecu code(s). Post the code here and maybe we can help out.

I had a cracked gas cap but replaced it and the ses light is still on. Time to visit the dealer. UGH.

you can reset the light yourself and then if it comes back on go to the dealer.
Here is a link to the site http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/ecu.asp
when you are pushing the gas pedal 5 times do it hard.

SES came on for me recently. I noticed nothing different about the car but when I took it to the dealership it turned out that the bank2 coil was going bad and cuasing a minor misfire. It was so minor that neither I nor the tech could feel it.

that wont work on 2k-2k1. the reset is for 2k2-k3. the only real reset on 2k-2k1 is to pull the negative cable for a couple of hours supposedly. dont reset the light before you find out what the problem and correct it. if you reset it and the problem/issue is still there then the cel can illuminate again.

you may want to check this link out here about the P0420 hopefully you do not have over 80k miles and your dealer should be able to take care of the repair under the 8yr./80k federally mandated emissions warranty.
