Paint job

I was wondering. Have any of you heard of Two tone paint? As in, you look at the car from one angle and its like...green, but then you look at it from another angle, its black. Something like that. If a good paint job (not maaco) runs about 3k, How much would something like this cost? The body shops i contacted in the area havent heard about anything like this. This somethin you would do to your car?

First of all there are many types of paint. The effect I think your talking about is caused by doing a 3 stage paint job (base coat, pearl & clear) If you place a different color pearl on top of a certain base coat it can create the effect of a light & dark look. Another type of paint I'm sure you have seen before is made by Dupont. The have a product line called (chromalusion). These paints can flip up to 8 different colors with a ton of different variences. Varencies would be the additional colors created by how the light is reflecting off the paint. These paints can cost up to $800.00 a pint. A paint job with one of these special colors will cost you between $6 & $10k. A pearl paint job will run closer to $3 & 5K. This all depends on what brand of materials you use. I am basing these estimates from using dupont products.

There called Cammellion (sp?) colors. They change as the view angle changes. Colors can go from red to green to gold by just walking around the car. Very expensive stuff!! Paint material allone will run 1500 to 2000 bucks! A paint job like that might run you 5 grand.

Three stage paints are your pearl colors. These Cammellion colors are a completely different ball game and there base coat, clear coat. (2 stage) House of colors makes them and I think Sherwin Williams is also making a line of paint with that effect as well. I'm sure there are others such as Glasurit (BASF) and Dupont as well.

High end body shops, like ours will have some sample swatches for you to look at or you can go to any Auto Body supply store and have them show you some samples.

Like mjmax said, it's Chameleon (that's how you spell it bro ) paint. it's basically different layers of paint with various reflectivity and color.

I think you've been watching too much of MTV "Pimp My Ride" though....they do this Chameleon paint on alot of the ricey cars they do!

lol, Im glad i wasnt dreaming and that this stuff does actually exist. that price tag is hefty, so i suppose ill start saving and wait, or wait until someone keys my car, which happens often enough here in boston :P. I got the idea not from MTV, but just from deciding what the general color scheme of my car would be. Im torn between Black N Green and Black N Crimson. Is working with this kind of paint any harder then working with regular auto paint?

From what I've seen it takes alot of specialty to get the fade to be consistent and even. I have heard that this kind of paint job is super $$$$$....it costs way more than even the top of the line "normal" paint job.

BTW, I have driven in Boston and there's NO WAY I'd roll with an expensive paint job....you guys drive even more crazy than people here in DC or in Italy where I lived before....my car got dinged twice in a matter of three days up there (once on the street, once when parked)....

Anyhoooo.....let me know if you actually do it...I'll be up in Cambridge for a week in July and would love to see what it looks like on a maxima...Unfortuantely I will not have the maxima when there (flying)....
