just bought a 1992 Maxima SE 5 speed

hey folks,
I just bought a 1992 nissan maxima SE with 112K miles. The engine and the car run great. My only concern is the wierd noise it makes when its cold. when you give it gas, it makes a whispy/windy sound through what sound to be the exhaust.

Also, apparently the struts were just replaced, but he ride is till kinda stiff. is this common?

does anybody know what im talking about?

anyways, the car is Gold with spoiler and all origonal. The wheels are in excellent shape. I will have to post pics when i get them.

The car has all the SE features other than leather and automatic. I prefer a 5 speed

Broken exhaust manifold studs. Common problem. Try reading all the stickies that appear at the top of this section for more info. Congrats on the purchase

Is this an expensive repair?

It can be depending on what side the broken stud(s) are on. FAQs/Stickies have the information you need

Wow, from the way you guys talk sometimes, I thought you basically had to replace the whole exhaust manifold :O :P
Good job on the car - "sniff" it's exactly what I wanted, need to find new resources for buying cars - from autotrader every morning I'd call the first day the ads came up - and every one of them "just sold it yesterday" or recently. Had to settle for a 91 auto GXE /w142k... ONLY maxima I could get (well, for under $3500) cost= $2900 (whoohoo!) + 2100 for transmission a few days later(damnit)

If that was in Massachusetts it would be a lemon, if repairs right after you buy it are more than 10% of the purchase price the previous owner has to pay for the repair or take the car back.

Im loving my maxima alot lately!! I will post pics here in a few days when i get them back. 1 question for you guys:

After being a Honda Accord owner for years, the main thing i dont like about the Maxima is the fuel economy. What are some ways to improve it?

Cheers
Eric

Keep your foot off the gas pedal.
But you're an addict now, the power will consume you.
IT HAS BEGUN

buy a better air intake/exhaust system. I get about 27-28 mpg on the freeway. A couple of weekends ago, I drove three hours round trip to the drag races and got 26 mpg -- that includes three runs.

Good find on the car. You will be glad you bought both a VE and a 5-speed. Gold is probably my favorite color. My first one was gold with black leather and a 5-speed, I wish I still had it.

I recently managed:

4/5/04
367.5miles / 13.253gal = 27.73

Made several ~90mile interstate trips back and forth, on that tank I was setting cruise at 75mph@2500rpm

I usually average 22-24 though on my '92 VE

Congrats on the purchase, thats an excellent year! For gas mileage, fixing the exhaust studs will help, and a warspeed y-pipe would probably also improve it, given that you can restrain your foot .

Sounds like a great purchase. I'm new to my 92 SE 5 speed as well, and I'm loving it.

Sounds like the same thing that happened to me. I got my 92 SE for 3000 bucks with 112000 on the clock, and 2 months later had to drop over 2 G's in a tranny rebuild oh well, loving the car now, good power, nice ride, and ok milage (24-26) for an auto

I hope to get the exhaust estimate today. Hopefully, it will be around $100 like you guys say it will be. Then, my maxima will be in tip top condition
cheers

If your timing is outside of 20-25 degrees, you'll lose fuel.
