Driveway accident ... no more Maxima ...
Driveway accident ... no more Maxima ...
Well, I figured it was about time that I told everyone what happened to my car. I posted a couple of pics on my CarDomain website. My dad just spaced out last weekend and forgot my car was in the driveway and he backed right into it with his Tahoe. With the slope of his driveway and the height of the Tahoe's bumper, it basically missed my front bumper and the headlight, hood, etc. took the brunt of the impact.
Bad news is this: I got two estimates from two different body shops, and they want somewhere around $3600 to fix everything (I know, it's ridiculous). Meanwhile, the insurance company decided that they're going to total the car rather than pay for the damage. The good news is that I'm getting a check for $3380 from the insurance, plus I get to keep the car (it will just have a salvage title).

I think at this point I'm going to sell the car as is to someone who can fix it up themselves. I only paid $3300 for the car two years ago, but I have spent another 2K on it since I've had it. I hope to get about $1000 out of my car now considering it still runs perfectly - all the damage is strictly body damage. I'm very disappointed that I'm going to lose my Maxima ... I loved that car, but I'd rather not drive the car as is. However, my mom has decided that she's going to get a new car now (a Honda S2000!!!), so I'll inherit her Accord. I know everyone here hates to hear Honda, but it's a good car - 98 EX-L 4cyl 5spd w/ under 60K miles.
I'm sure I'll browse this site every once in a while, but probably not too often. Everyone has been very helpful and I'll miss the Maxima community. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up another Maxima someday in the near future (until then, I'm stuck w/ a Honda!)

That's an easy fix. Hood/fender/bumber/headlight/front bumper maybe from a bone yard for maybe $300 and little bit of pulling with a come-a-long tied to a telephone pole. new paint might be $400 ish. Then sell it.
Wow dude, $3600 for that...wow. Either way that's sad you lost the maxima. The honda should do your alright as far as space and economy, so at least you can be thankful you have something.....and your getting money back from your car....though not all.

Thats about the same damage I had....it's a VERY east fix as Jeff said. You can find a cheap parts place online or even from a yard and replace the parts for about 300.
Buy a body kit, rims, and springs w/ the $3300 you're gettin!

Wow you got hooked up with teh whole total loss and recieving the check, you could definetly fix that cheap... lol new fender, bumper, light and you should be good to go... Why downgrade to a 4cyl when you could just buy more mods with the max?
Wow I can't believe they wrote that off as being totaled, gave you a check and let you keep the car. It doesn't look all that bad. I say take that $3380, sell the the 3rd gen as a whole, sell mods separately, and buy a 95/96 4th gen with 90k miles or so. Either way, you got a check, you still have the max, and your getting a low mile accord so your ok. Just don't rice the accord and your good to go.

I say fix your max and keep it. You'll end up with extra money that you can put to good use either in mods or somewhere else.
Good luck.
You said you spent $2000 in the last 2 years on your Max. This would have to be regular maintenance, I assume? Cars maintenance cost is $1000 per year (average) from year 4 and beyond.
That would mean you did not actually "invest" on the MAx with modifications of some kind, but just regular maintenance.

Interesting.....says 92-94 but the grill is obviously an 89-91 one.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I decided today that I'm going to go ahead and sell the Max as is ... I have a friend that is going to give me $1000 for it. However, since I'll need something to do this summer, I'm going to help him go to the junkyard and get some newer (undamaged) parts for my old Max ... he wants to at least get a hood and maybe a bumper and/or quarterpanel (along with the headlight, obviously). That way I've got the best of both worlds ... I'm getting $4400 out of the car, plus I know who it's going to and I know it will be taken care of.
the damage doesn't look that bad, but I believe it that it cost that much to fix it through a body shop. Well good luck with your Honda, don't slurge the money you're getting from the insurance. I would just bank it, let it grow, maybe you'll have enough to buy a car of your dream.
