I stay away from tranny issues, my 5-speed is currently at a tranny shop. Get ready to fork some dough.

Mine does that under moderate to hard acceleration. If you switch off overdrive, does it change up to 3rd? (mine will and once in third I switch o/d back on with no problems). It's a combination of oil pressure, band wear & electronics - but I don't know how they all relate. Try changing the tranny fluid to see if this helps (you can't change the filter - that year it'll be a RE4F02A model).

This transmission normally loses overdrive first, then 3rd when it needs replacing / rebuilding. Note that the RL4F02A tranny is used in the U11 & U12 Stanza (some up-spec stanza's may also use RE4F02A trannies - I don't know for sure). I have swapped valve bodies from a stanza to my max with no problem - they may use the same bolt pattern from tranny bell housing to engine. I think the only difference between the them is that the RE4 has an ecu while the RL4 doesn't. Ask a tranny shop to be sure.

The alternative is to get a RE4F04A tranny as used with the VE engines & replace the drive axles & hubs (or so I've been told via this forum)
