bmw antenna conversion

before my new paintjob this summer i've thought about removing the stock antenna and putting a bmw "fin" antenna on the roof. my questions are has anyone ever done this, is it possible and how hard would it be to rewire it.(oh yeah and do you guys think it would look good or is this just a stupid idea.)

-thanks

IMO, just about anything but that crappy power antenna is a good idea. I rarely even use my radio for fear of breaking mine.

I haven't seen anyone with one (doesn't mean it hasn't been done), but I would think it wouldn't be super difficult. You just have to find where to run the wires up under the headliner and then patch the hole where the stock antenna is.

RedMax92, Mine already broke, so I just play CDs. hahah. See theres not always an end to everything.

Go for it. You'll have something original atleast if it doesnt turn out the way you like. What I have heard of is the Acura MDX antenna. I dont know if that looks the same, but I've seen a couple of people have that one.

And about the old antenna, are you going to fill the hole, so it has a clean look?

ive got a question... i remember bout a year and half ago on these boards there was someone that used the name skybluemax or somethin like that.. he had that really nice maxima that was featured in some old mags, but he got into an accident and his car was totalled. i believe he had newspaper clippings of the accident on his cardoamin page as well. anyway, i remember he had a cool antenna that was located on the roof right above the back window. does anyone know of the car im talkin about, as well as his cardomain link so i can take a look again?

That would be a great mod if you could get it to work right. I really like the looks of the "fin" ones and even the short antenna's that are mounted on the center of the car, I think on VW's. Let us know how it turns out because I'd rather do that mod than spend time replacing my stupid antenna motor.

There were many people with these a couple years ago. They called them 'oogly' antennas so if you could search, you could find plenty of info that way. I'm not sure where they got it, but you're right - VW does have these so you could probably get one from there or ebay.

You'll need to drill a hole in the roof to mount it so be sure you want it.

I have long since given up on regular radio for xm and the "sophisticated", "German auto looking antenna-on-roof" look

hmn...total of 20 minutes to put on....

remove rear seats, mount antenna on roof, run cable along rear window molding, through trunk, under parcel shelf, behind seats to front.....and voila. Easy as cake.

works excellent...even in my garage.

OT but have you had your rear window replaced? That is not the factory weather stripping for an SE.

good eye

I didn't have it replaced but the previous owner must have. I found traces of broken glass under the rear seats. Looked up carfax...no trace of any incident at all. I've asked him but he denies anything happened so..not much I can do. Kinda makes me wonder what else I haven't noticed.

yeah, mine was like that too. My grill and front end were replaced. The grill is all red (no black on the slats going across) and my Nissan "hamburger" is black instead of red inside. Nothing came up on Carfax except my brother's accident where he got rear ended. Oh, well. It runs and drives,

Continuing OT, does anyone know if the Jim Rome Show (the Jungle) can be heard on XM or Sirius??? If so, I might have to consider a subscription...

i'll get back with you Red92MaxSE on the Jim Rome Show. i do know there's a grip load of comedy stuff on each sat radio provider. one reason i brought the sat radio up is i work at best buy, i do have to say though that even before i worked there i wanted it.

XM and sirius have their line up on their site. It even gives you the channels.
